Colloto

Colloto is a cider-making town on the eastern edge of Oviedo, Asturias, shared between the municipalities of Oviedo and Siero. Come for a working llagar, local cider and a compact stretch of older village fabric along Camino Real.

Orientation

Colloto—also known in Asturian as Cualloto—sits about 5 km from central Oviedo. It is not a separate historic centre: the settlement straddles the Oviedo–Siero boundary, with its built-up core spread along Camino Real and the N-634 corridor.

This is a practical stop for cider culture rather than a day of monument-hopping. Its strongest identity is the llagar, the Asturian cider house where apples are processed and cider is made.

The essential visit: Llagar Herminio

Llagar Herminio, at Camino Real 11, is a working cider producer founded in 1943. A guided visit follows the production chain from apple reception and selection through pressing and fermentation to bottling. It is the useful choice if you want to see what sits behind a bottle of Asturian natural cider rather than only drink it in a bar.

The visit ends with tastings of two ciders:

  • Sidra Herminio, the house’s natural cider.
  • Zythos, a Protected Designation of Origin cider from Asturias.

Tours include cider drawn directly from the barrel and, on paid visits, a printed glass. The on-site sidrería also serves food; the combined tour-and-meal option is aimed at a longer lunch rather than a quick tasting.

Cider etiquette

Traditional Asturian cider is poured in a high, thin stream—escanciado—to aerate it. Drink the small pour promptly rather than treating it as a full glass. In a sidrería, order a bottle if you want the table service and pouring ritual; a botellina is a small bottle.

The llagar tour is best for visitors who want context: presses, tanks, fermentation and the distinction between a standard natural cider and a DOP bottling. It is a production site, so guided access—not a casual walk-in inspection—is the appropriate way to see the facilities.

Getting there and around

From Oviedo, approach Colloto via the N-634; Camino Real runs parallel through the settlement. The municipal social centre on Calle Luis Suárez Ximielga is near the village core, health centre and sports hall, and has public parking nearby.

Public transport also serves the area. The stop on Luis Suárez Ximielga connects with the H1 bus line and rail services linking Oviedo with Infiesto, Santander, Laviana, Trubia and Gijón. Once in the core, the key addresses are close enough to cover on foot.

Before you go

Llagar Herminio requires advance booking for guided tours. Standard tours run for about an hour; minors may join only with an adult. Timed visits are offered on weekdays and on Saturday and public-holiday mornings, with a single 12:30 departure on those mornings. Confirm the current slot when reserving.
