Trevélez

Orientation

Trevélez stands at roughly 1,500 metres in the Sierra Nevada, in the eastern Alpujarras of Granada province. The settlement is arranged in three stacked quarters—Barrio Bajo, Barrio Medio and Barrio Alto—falling towards the Trevélez River. Expect steep gradients throughout; this is a town best explored on foot, slowly and in sturdy shoes.

The village is a practical base for high-country walks, but its compact centre is the main event: narrow lanes, whitewashed houses, flat roofs and covered passages known as tinaos.

Walk the three barrios

Start in Barrio Bajo, then climb Calle Real through the older fabric of the town. The municipality’s signed Three Barrios route is only 1 km, but rises 147 metres from about 1,453 to 1,588 metres; allow more than its nominal 16 minutes for stops and the climb.

Look for:

• Fuente-Lavadero del Barrio Bajo, combining a drinking fountain, washhouse and animal trough.
• San Benito Church in the lower-to-middle section of the route.
• Tinaos and corralones: covered, semi-public passages beneath or between houses.
• Era del Fuerte in Barrio Alto, a former threshing floor now used as a viewpoint over the roofs and valley.

The climb also passes several small fountains and washhouses. They are useful markers as much as heritage details.

Ham and mountain cooking

Trevélez is closely associated with Jamón de Trevélez, a Protected Geographical Indication ham cured in the mountain climate. Curing sheds are part of the townscape, especially in the lower and middle barrios. Some offer visits; a dedicated ham museum and drying-shed visit is available at Jamones Vallejo.

Order ham plainly sliced to understand its mild, lightly salted character. Local menus also commonly pair it with trout from the Trevélez River or serve it alongside migas, the crumb-based mountain dish. For certified ham to take away, look for the PGI/IGP identification rather than treating every ham bearing the town’s name as equivalent.

Trails and conditions

Marked routes leave the town for the Sierra Nevada, including the GR-7 and Sulayr/GR-240 long-distance paths. The local Siete Lagunas route climbs from around 1,561 to 3,125 metres: it is a serious mountain outing, not an extension of the village walk.

Important: high elevation changes conditions quickly. Carry water, warm layers and navigation, and do not turn a village visit into a high-mountain ascent without an appropriate weather forecast and equipment.

Getting there and timing

Trevélez lies 97 km from Granada. The final approach is a mountain road; drive patiently and leave the car in the lower part where possible rather than attempting the tight upper lanes. Visit the streets in the morning or late afternoon for cooler walking light. In winter, allow for cold conditions even when the lowlands are mild.
