Cabo Vidio, Asturias

Cabo Vidio is a cliff-bound headland on the Cantabrian coast at Oviñana, in Cudillero municipality, western Asturias. Its lighthouse, sea cliffs and coastal viewpoints make it a focused stop between Cudillero and Luarca.

The headland

Cabo Vidio projects into the Cantabrian Sea from the parish of Oviñana. The essential scene is direct and exposed: a lighthouse on high ground, deep rock cliffs and open water on three sides. The cliffs rise roughly 80 to 100 metres above the sea; quartzite and slate form the rock face.

The Faro de Cabo Vidio, inaugurated in 1950, is the last lighthouse built in Asturias. Its walled compound is the cape’s fixed landmark and the start point for the principal signed coastal walk.

What to see

Walk out from the lighthouse for the broadest coastal views. The headland’s northern end faces the offshore Chouzano islet, while the coastline opens towards small coves and beaches on either side. In clear conditions, the long Asturian coast is visible in both directions.

Below the lighthouse lies La Iglesiona, a large sea cave hollowed by wave erosion. It is a striking feature, but not a casual detour: its entrance is exposed only at low tide and the descent is difficult. Visit it only with a specialist guide and calm sea conditions.

Walking options

For a short visit, use the paths and viewpoints around the lighthouse, then return the same way. This is the sensible choice when wind, rain or low cloud makes the cliff edge uncomfortable.

For a longer outing, the signed Ruta Entrecabos begins at Faro de Cabo Vidio and runs west along cliffs, viewpoints, small coastal settlements and beaches to Playa del Silencio. It is a 10.2 km linear route, rated easy, with an estimated walking time of three to five hours. It has more than 300 metres of cumulative ascent and descent, so treat it as a hike rather than a promenade. Arrange your return before setting off.

Getting there and staying safe

Reach the cape by local road from Oviñana; parking is available near the lighthouse but is limited. Oviñana is the useful nearby base for supplies and onward transport.

Cliff warning: several paths run beside unguarded drops. Stay back from the edge, especially in wind or on wet ground, and keep children and dogs close. Do not attempt beach crossings or cave access at high tide. The coast is exposed year-round, so windproof layers and shoes with grip matter more than distance.
