Llanes
Llanes is a compact fishing town on Asturias’s eastern Cantabrian coast, set between the sea and the Sierra del Cuera. Its medieval core, working harbour, painted breakwater and cliff-top promenade fit into an easy walk.
Get oriented
Llanes sits on the coast of eastern Asturias, with the harbour and old town packed into a small area below the Paseo de San Pedro. The Sierra del Cuera rises inland; the town faces the Cantabrian Sea.
This is a place to explore on foot. Start in the historic centre, descend to the harbour, then climb or loop round to the promenade and El Sablón beach. The three main strands—medieval streets, port and cliffs—are close together.
The historic core
The historic quarter is a protected historic-artistic ensemble, shaped by Llanes’s medieval role as a fortified port. Look for surviving stretches of the 13th-century wall and the round Torreón, then continue through the tight lanes towards the Basilica of Santa María del Concejo.
Useful stops include:
- Calle Mayor, the central old-town street.
- Basilica of Santa María del Concejo, begun in the 13th century and combining Romanesque and Gothic elements.
- Palacio de Gastañaga and the Palacio del Duque de Estrada, reminders of the town’s later civic wealth.
The centre is compact but its lanes are narrow. Leave a car or camper outside the oldest streets and cover this section on foot.
Harbour and Memory Cubes
The harbour explains Llanes: fishing and maritime trade supported the town for centuries. Walk its inner quays towards the breakwater, where Agustín Ibarrola turned more than 200 concrete blocks into Los Cubos de la Memoria. The painted forms—abstract and figurative—make the harbour infrastructure itself the town’s defining piece of public art.
Continue along the water for views back to the old town and up to the green ridge of the Paseo de San Pedro. The harbour is also the practical point to orient yourself before choosing the old town, beach or eastern coastal walk.
Paseo de San Pedro and the beaches
The Paseo de San Pedro, laid out in 1847, is a grassy cliff-top walk above the town. It looks over the harbour, El Sablón beach, the coastline and the Sierra del Cuera. It is Llanes’s clearest overview; walk it early or late when you want the town and coast in one frame.
Below it, El Sablón is the central town beach, a semicircle of sand close to both harbour and historic core. For a longer seaside extension, follow the San Antón route east towards Puertu Chicu and Toró. Puertu Chicu changes markedly with the tide, leaving much less beach at high water. Toró combines sand with distinctive jagged rocks.
Arrival and practical rhythm
The A-8 is the fast east–west approach through Asturias; Llanes is reached by a coastal detour. Once in town, walking is more efficient than moving a vehicle between sights. The municipal tourist office is in the former fish market at Marqués de Canillejas 1, beside the harbour.
Llanes is particularly busy in summer. Its three major town festivals fall in July (La Magdalena), August (San Roque) and early September (La Guía), when the centre’s normal traffic and parking rhythm changes.
