Uttakleiv Beach
Uttakleiv is a beach and small coastal community on the north side of Vestvågøy in Lofoten, Norway. Pale sand, large rounded rocks and an open-sea horizon give it a rougher character than nearby Haukland.
The shoreline
Uttakleiv is a north-facing beach on Vestvågøy’s outer coast. Its defining feature is the shift from pale sand to large, rounded shore boulders, with mountains rising beyond the beach and the open Norwegian Sea ahead. Walk the sand first, then continue along the rockier edge for the strongest views of the coast.
This is a landscape stop rather than a serviced swimming beach. The sea is cold, and wet boulders and seaweed can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip if you intend to explore beyond the sand.
Light and timing
The broad northern horizon makes Uttakleiv a strong place for summer midnight-sun light and, on clear dark nights, northern lights. In summer, visiting late in the evening also avoids the busiest part of the day. In colder months, wind and icy ground can change conditions quickly; bring a windproof outer layer and traction footwear when needed.
For photographs, the rounded rocks give the beach its best foreground. Low water can reveal more of the rocky shoreline, but do not scramble onto wave-washed slabs in rough conditions.
Walk to Haukland
An old coastal road links Uttakleiv with Haukland Beach around the headland. The one-way walk is about 4 km and takes roughly an hour, following the coast rather than the road tunnel. It is a practical way to experience two distinctly different Lofoten beaches in one outing: Haukland’s broader sheltered bay and Uttakleiv’s boulder-strewn shore.
Return on the same route unless you have arranged transport at the other end. The tunnel is for vehicles; do not use it as a walking route.
Arrival and facilities
From Leknes, follow the E10 toward Å, turn toward Haukland and continue through the tunnel to Uttakleiv. The drive takes about 20 minutes. A car is the simplest option for this detour; services at the beach itself are limited.
There is paid parking, managed by automatic licence-plate recognition, and basic visitor infrastructure including public toilets and waste facilities. Parking and overnight arrangements support upkeep of this privately owned farming-community landscape. Bring food and drinking water rather than expecting a café or shop.
Camping and respect
Marked areas distinguish organised camping from other parts of the site. Use the appropriate zone, pay applicable charges and follow signs at the entrance. Do not park on grass, block local access or set up on farmland.
Keep to established paths across the pasture and leave gates as you find them. Take rubbish with you if bins are full. The beach’s appeal depends on the sand, stones and open ground remaining intact.
