Reine

Reine is a working fishing village in Moskenes municipality, on the western end of Lofoten’s Moskenesøya. Its small islands, rorbuer and harbour sit between Vestfjord and the mountain-walled Reinefjord.

Orientation

Reine is the municipal centre of Moskenes and a compact fishing settlement of roughly 300 residents. The E10 crosses its chain of low islands, bridges and bends; Vestfjord lies to one side, while Reinefjord cuts inland beneath steep peaks on the other.

This is not a reconstructed fishing village. Fish reception and processing remain central local industries, alongside mechanical services and tourism. Red rorbuer—the former seasonal cabins of Lofoten fishermen—still define the waterfront; many now operate as accommodation.

Walk the harbour and islands

Reine is best understood on foot. Follow the public streets and quays to see boats, cabins, drying racks and the close relationship between harbour and mountain. The settlement is small, but it is an active workplace and residential community.

  • Use public parking rather than taking a car into the narrowest streets.
  • Photograph stockfish without touching it: it is food in production.
  • Keep clear of working areas, private cabins and residents’ property.

Reine’s position also makes it a departure point for scheduled boat trips into Reinefjord, including the roadless settlements deeper in the fjord.

Reinebringen

The stone stairway to Reinebringen begins a short walk from the village centre and climbs almost 2,000 steps. It is a demanding ascent, not a casual viewpoint stroll. From the top, Reine’s islands, bridges, harbour and surrounding fjords read as one connected landscape.

Avoid the hike in the winter half of the year. Snow, ice, wind and limited daylight make the route unsuitable; even in milder conditions, wet steps require proper footwear and a realistic assessment of fitness.

Arriving and getting around

The E10 runs through Reine. From the Bodø–Moskenes ferry, continue by bus or road to the village; buses from Leknes and Svolvær also serve the area. Once in Reine, walking is the sensible way to move around its core.

Parking capacity is limited in high season. Park in public spaces at the edge of the centre and continue on foot rather than stopping on narrow roads or quays.

Timing and local rules

Summer brings long light and the highest visitor pressure. Winter brings Arctic conditions and very short days. Reine rewards an unhurried visit in either season, but the harbour’s working rhythm comes first.

Use established campsites rather than camping in the village. Put rubbish in bins, and do not treat passing places or service areas as overnight stops. In winter, wear a reflector when walking after dark: drivers may not see pedestrians on the unlit roads.
