Sørvågen
Sørvågen is a working fishing village on Moskenesøya in western Lofoten, Norway, on the E10 just before its terminus at Å. It pairs a harbour settlement with a notable early telecommunications story and direct access to lake-and-mountain trails.
Orientation
Sørvågen sits on the south side of Moskenesøya in Moskenes municipality, with the E10 running through the village. It is a real service village rather than an open-air museum: fishing activity, homes, shops and public services share the narrow coastal setting. Å lies immediately south; keep the two places distinct when navigating.
The harbour, waterside cabins and steep mountain backdrop make a worthwhile short walk, but Sørvågen’s defining landmark is inland by the main road: the white former telegraph building.
Sørvågen Radio
Sørvågen Radio is the local telecommunications museum in the former telegraph and telephone station at Moskenesveien 889. The large white wooden building was completed in 1914 to designs by Lilla Georgine Hansen, Norway’s first woman architect with her own practice.
Inside, the collection follows the shift from telegraphy and Morse equipment to telephone exchanges, wireless communication and early mobile phones. The site explains why this small fishing village became a communications node:
- The Lofoten telegraph line reached Sørvågen in 1861.
- A wireless connection between Sørvågen and Røst opened in 1906.
- The museum occupies the building itself, not a replica.
Opening is seasonal, so plan this as a timed stop rather than assuming walk-in access year-round.
Walks from the village
Sørvågen is a practical trailhead for the Munkebu route. The approach begins near Srvågvatnet and heads past waterfalls and a chain of lakes, including Stuvdalsvatnet, before climbing into the interior of Moskenesøya.
The first section is enough for a substantial outing; the full route to Munkebu is a mountain hike. Expect rocky ground, boggy sections and steep passages. Fixed chains assist on some rock steps, but wet rock is slippery. Bring proper footwear and turn back if visibility or weather deteriorates.
For a quieter, lower-level option, follow paths around Sørvågvatnet and along the harbour rather than committing to the high route.
Getting there and practicalities
Drive the E10 to Sørvågen; Å is a short distance farther south, where the road ends. The Bodø–Moskenes ferry arrives at Moskenes north of the village, making Sørvågen a straightforward onward stop by road.
Use signed parking, especially around trail access and the museum. The village is compact enough to explore on foot once parked. In summer, give yourself extra time on the E10: traffic and parking pressure increase sharply across western Lofoten.
