Hamnøy
Hamnøy is a compact fishing village on Moskenesøya in Lofoten, northern Norway, just northeast of Reine. Its red rorbuer, harbour water and steep mountain backdrop make it one of the defining coastal scenes on the E10.
Orientation
Hamnøy sits on the eastern side of Moskenesøya, beside Vestfjorden, in Moskenes municipality. It is a small working fishing settlement rather than a separate resort town, linked into the E10 road line between the outer Lofoten villages.
The place is best understood as a tight cluster of waterfront buildings, quays and cabins at the entrance to Reinefjord. Reine is about 1.5 km to the southwest as the crow flies, with Sakrisøy between the two settlements.
The essential view
The signature Hamnøy scene is the group of red rorbuer—former fishermen’s cabins—seen across the water with the steep profile of Festhelltinden behind. The E10 bridge provides the clear public-road angle for this composition.
Keep the stop simple:
- Walk the bridge or roadside only where there is room and visibility.
- Photograph the cabins, harbour and mountains from public space.
- Do not step onto cabin decks, private quays or working areas for a closer shot.
The cabins are not stage scenery. Several belong to Eliassen Rorbuer, a long-running accommodation complex whose oldest cabins date from 1890.
Fishing-village context
Hamnøy developed around the Lofoten cod fishery and the production of stockfish. From January to April, cod fishing remains a major seasonal feature of the archipelago; fish drying racks and utility buildings are part of the working landscape.
The village’s current form also reflects later infrastructure. A pier built in 1953 created a sheltered harbour, while road and bridge connections replaced the former ferry link with Reine. That history explains why the E10 passes so close to the water and buildings here.
Getting there and moving around
Follow the E10 to Hamnøy; it runs directly through the settlement and across the bridges toward Reine. A car gives the most flexibility on this exposed southern end of Lofoten, though the village itself is small enough to take in on foot.
Traffic and stopping space are limited. Do not stop in the carriageway or block driveways, quays or access for boats and deliveries. In poor weather, the bridge and roadside can be wet, icy or wind-exposed.
Timing your visit
Early morning or later evening is the calmest time for the bridge view. Winter brings low light and the active cod-fishing season; summer offers long daylight. Conditions change quickly around the fjord, so use the mountain view as the priority and let the weather set the mood.
