Moskenes
Moskenes is a small village and ferry port on the southern part of Moskenesøya in western Lofoten, Norway. It is the practical sea gateway for the Bodø–Værøy–Røst–Moskenes route and a stop on the E10.
Orientation
Moskenes is a compact settlement on the south side of Moskenesøya, immediately north of Sørvågen. It is not a resort centre: its defining feature is the ferry quay, where the road network of western Lofoten meets Vestfjorden.
The E10 runs through the village area. Use Moskenes as an arrival or departure point, a short pause between road legs, or a base only if you have lodging arranged locally. For a larger choice of services, continue along the E10 to the nearby villages.
Ferry quay and scenic-route stop
The quay is served by the Bodø–Værøy–Røst–Moskenes car-ferry route. Sailings and calling patterns vary by date, so build your day around the departure you actually intend to use rather than treating the quay as a casual stop.
The ferry terminal is also a National Scenic Route Lofoten rest area. Its pale grey-blue service building was designed to make waits more comfortable and frames the harbour approach.
- Facilities: waiting room and toilet.
- Access: the site is wheelchair accessible.
- Year-round detail: the toilet is open all year.
- Important: do not empty motorhome or caravan toilets here.
Long waits can occur between departures. Keep the ferry lanes clear and follow staff instructions; this is working transport infrastructure, not general parking.
Arriving with a vehicle
In summer, Moskenes can be heavily used by cars, campers and coaches. A vehicle reservation is available for part of the ferry capacity; without one, you join the ordinary queue and travel if space remains. Arrive with enough margin for loading, especially when a sailing is central to an onward plan.
Travelling on foot is simpler but still requires attention to the day’s timetable and passenger-registration requirements. The crossing is long, and schedules change between summer and winter.
Road connections and timing
The E10 is the only continuous road connection through this part of Lofoten. From Moskenes it runs northeast toward Reine and the rest of the archipelago; southwest it continues through Sørvågen to Å, where the E10 ends.
July to mid-August is the busiest driving period. April to June and September to October are quieter, but snow and icy roads remain possible. Do not use passing places as parking bays. Outside summer, tunnel works elsewhere on the western Lofoten route can impose timed passages and night restrictions, so check live road information before committing to a ferry or accommodation schedule.
A short stop done properly
Moskenes works best at quay scale: use the rest area, take in the view toward the ferry approach, and keep the stop efficient. The service building is the most distinctive piece of architecture here; the surrounding slopes and water explain why the ferry approach is part of the journey rather than merely a transfer.
