Å i Lofoten
Å is a preserved fishing village at the southern end of Moskenesøya in Lofoten, Norway, where the E10 reaches its literal terminus. Its historic harbour buildings form the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum.
At the end of the E10
Å sits at the far southwestern end of Lofoten, between mountains and the Vestfjord. The E10, which crosses the island chain from the east, ends here. Beyond the village lies open sea and the surrounding terrain belongs to the wider Lofotodden landscape.
The name is short but easily confused with other Norwegian places. On maps, bus timetables and road signs, look for Å i Lofoten.
A fishing village, not a replica
The village grew around the Lofoten fishery, and its surviving waterfront is unusually complete. The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum occupies authentic nineteenth-century buildings rather than a purpose-built museum site. Its focus is the working system behind a seasonal fishery: visiting fishermen, resident families and the owner of the fishing station.
The core buildings include:
- a boathouse with traditional wooden boats;
- a rorbu, the compact cabin rented to fishermen;
- a smithy and a tenant farmer’s cottage;
- a post office, bakery and cod-liver-oil factory.
Walk between the structures before going indoors. Their positions around the harbour make clear how housing, boat work, trade and fish processing functioned together.
Museum visit and bakery
Museum admission covers the historic buildings and exhibitions; guided tours are offered on many days. The museum operates year-round, though opening hours vary with the season.
The old bakery is the practical stop during the summer season. Bread and cinnamon rolls are baked in its historic stone oven, dating from 1878. It generally runs from June through September, alongside the seasonal café. Outside summer, do not assume that bakery service or every building is open.
Arrival and parking
By car: follow the E10 through the final tunnel and use the designated car park beyond it. The old village centre is about a three-minute walk downhill from the parking area. Public toilets and visitor services are also there.
By bus: route 300, Lofotekspressen, connects Å with the rest of Lofoten and can continue toward Narvik or Evenes depending on the service. Å is also a short onward journey from the Bodø–Moskenes ferry terminal.
Do not park on narrow road margins or passing places. The village centre is small; leave the car in the signed area and explore on foot.
How to use your time
Allow an hour for a harbour walk and the principal museum buildings; add time for a tour or bakery stop. Start at the car park, walk into old Å, then follow the waterfront rather than treating the road-end sign as the destination. The point of Å is the working fishing settlement behind it.
