Gimsøya
Gimsøya is a small Lofoten island in VÅgan Municipality, between AustvÅgØya and VestvÅgØya. Its north coast combines white beaches, marshland and the standalone summit of Hoven.
Orientation
Gimsøya sits in the middle of the road-connected Lofoten chain, between AustvÅgØya to the east and VestvÅgØya to the west. The E10 crosses its southern side, using the Gimsøystraumen Bridge in the east and the Sundklakkstraumen Bridge in the west.
The island changes character quickly. The south and east are more mountainous; the north and west are low, open and marshy, apart from Hoven, which rises to 367 metres above Hov. This is the part of Gimsøya to seek out for broad sea horizons rather than enclosed harbour scenery.
Hov and the north coast
Hov is the practical focal point for a visit. White-sand beaches lie beside the open Norwegian Sea, with Hoven immediately inland. The coastal setting also holds Lofoten Links, a links golf course built among the beach landscape, and Hov Gård, which runs guided rides on Icelandic horses.
For a simple shoreline stop, walk the sand at Hov and look north across the open water. The north-facing coast is especially useful on clear summer evenings, when the low horizon suits midnight-sun viewing. In the darker months, the same open sky can suit northern-lights viewing, though clear skies are essential.
Walk Hoven
Hoven is the island's most direct summit walk. The marked route begins at the Lofoten Links car park, about 300 metres west of the clubhouse.
- Distance: 2 km each way
- Time: about 1 hour each way
- Ascent: 367 metres
- Usual season: May to December, depending on snow conditions
The route crosses marshy ground before a gradual climb. The path is generally clear, but includes steeper, rocky sections; it can be wet after rain. The summit gives a 360-degree view across beaches, sea and the surrounding Lofoten mountains. Treat it as a mountain walk, not a beach stroll: use proper footwear and turn back if wind, low cloud or snow makes the route unsuitable.
Wetlands and access
Gimsøya has protected areas associated with birdlife and fauna, including wetland around Hoven. Stay on established routes and respect signs and any seasonal restrictions. The broad terrain can look easy to cross, but marsh ground is easily damaged and can be wet underfoot.
Getting around
A car is the most efficient way to explore the island. The E10 provides the through route, while local roads lead north to Hov and around the island. Buses serve the main road, but do not remove the need to plan the final stretch to beaches, trailheads or accommodation. Gimsøya is a good E10 detour between SvolvÆr and Leknes; allow time for its side roads rather than treating it as a quick bridge crossing.
