Haukland Beach

Beach · Norway

Haukland Beach

Haukland is a sheltered white-sand beach on the north side of Vestvågøy in Lofoten, about 10–15 minutes by road from Leknes. It sits below Himmeltinden, with a broad bay, clear water and direct access to coastal and mountain walks.

The beach

Hauklandstranda is the main beach at Haukland: a pale, wide sweep of sand in a bay protected by mountains on three sides. The water can look turquoise in clear weather, but this is Arctic Norway rather than a warm-water resort. Treat swimming as a brisk dip and judge conditions on the day.

The appeal is straightforward: sand underfoot, the sea ahead and the steep bulk of Himmeltinden behind. Walk the length of the shore, then use the marked paths and old road to see how quickly the terrain shifts from sheltered bay to exposed coast.

Walk to Uttakleiv

The former road around Veggen links Haukland with Uttakleiv. It is a flat, gravelled coastal walk of about 4 km each way and follows the shoreline at sea level. It makes a sensible extension for visitors who want more than the beach without committing to a summit.

Uttakleiv is a separate beach on the other side of the headland, where sand is broken up by large rounded stones and the coast faces more directly into the open sea. Walk out and return the same way, or combine it with the old pass route only if you are prepared for hill terrain.

Mountain options

The Haukland parking area is also the starting point for Mannen and Himmeltinden.

  • Mannen: a 400-metre summit; allow 2–3 hours return. The route is short but has exposed sections near the top, so it is not a casual beach stroll.
  • Himmeltinden: a much longer, steep mountain day. The commonly visited summit is 931 metres; the route demands proper footwear, time and stable conditions.

For either walk, stay on the trail. Wet ground can be slippery, and grazing animals may be present.

Arrival and facilities

Haukland is a detour from the Lofoten Scenic Route on Vestvågøy. From Leknes, follow the signed local roads towards Haukland; driving takes roughly 10–15 minutes. The beach has a purpose-built visitor area with marked walking paths, parking, accessible spaces, motorhome bays, toilets and a café/service building.

The toilet is open year-round. Parking is managed on site, with a maximum stay in place; register and pay promptly after arrival. Haukland is a public outdoor area, not a conventional campsite: use only designated tenting areas and observe the local restrictions. Do not empty motorhome or caravan toilets here.

When to go

Summer brings the easiest walking conditions and long daylight, but the middle of warm days is the busiest period. Earlier or later in the day gives the beach more space. Outside summer, Haukland remains accessible, though mountain routes require conditions-aware planning and daylight shrinks sharply. The beach itself is worthwhile in any season for a shore walk and the mountain-and-bay view.
