Sakrisøy
Sakrisøy is a tiny fishing island in Reinefjord, Moskenes municipality, Lofoten, positioned between Hamnøy and Reine. The E10 crosses it, passing rorbuer, fish-drying structures and a long-running seafood business below Olstind.
Orientation
Sakrisøy is a small island and fishing settlement on Reinefjord in western Lofoten. It sits between Hamnøy and Reine, with the E10 running across its northern side. At roughly three hectares, it is a compact stop rather than a village to explore for hours: its appeal is the close arrangement of water, working fishing structures, cabins and mountain walls.
Olstind dominates the immediate setting. The peak rises on Moskenesøya across the fjord, giving Sakrisøy its recognisable hard-edged mountain backdrop.
What to look for
Walk the island’s short lanes and shoreline edges to see the elements of a Lofoten fishing station gathered in one place:
- Rorbuer: former fishermen’s cabins remain a defining part of the waterfront. Some cabins on the island date from 1874 and are used as accommodation.
- Fish-drying infrastructure: the fishing net rack is both a working structure and a local landmark. An earlier rack served seine fishing; the present design is used for products including cured cod, stockfish snacks and dried salted cod.
- M/S Pøyken: this restored 1928 fishing boat stands on land near the Olstind cabin and recalls the small boats used by Lofoten fishermen.
The island was bought by the Gylseth family in 1889. Fishing, fish buying and trade shaped the settlement, which was more self-contained before a bridge connected it in 1981.
Seafood stop
Anita’s Seafood combines a seafood bar with a delicatessen shop. The counter focuses on the island’s own and other Lofoten products, including smoked salmon, trout, halibut, stockfish and caviar. It is the practical place on Sakrisøy for a meal or for buying fish products to take away.
This is a working coastal setting, not an open-air museum. Keep clear of racks, boats, cabins and areas used by the businesses or overnight guests.
Getting there and around
By road: Follow the E10; it passes directly through Sakrisøy. Reine is about 3 km away. The island’s businesses provide parking for their guests, but space is limited by the settlement’s size.
On foot: Sakrisøy itself is easily covered on foot. Use it as a short pause on the road between Hamnøy and Reine, rather than treating it as a separate hiking area.
Timing
Come in daylight if your priority is the contrast between the rack, cabins, fjord and Olstind. Summer brings long daylight; autumn and winter bring darker conditions and a more exposed coastal feel. Food service and accommodation are operated locally, so their seasonal hours determine how long you can linger.
