Oslofjord

The Oslofjord is the broad waterway running from Oslo south towards the Skagerrak in southeastern Norway. From the capital, public ferries make its inner islands an easy day trip for walks, swimming and shoreline views.

The fjord at a glance

The Oslofjord is Norway’s capital-side fjord: a long, island-studded waterway that connects Oslo with the Skagerrak. It is divided into an inner fjord around Oslo and an outer section beyond the Drøbak narrows. For a city stay, concentrate on the inner islands; they deliver open water, rocky shores and a quick break from central Oslo without treating the fjord as a cruise-only attraction.

Start at the city harbour

Rådhusbrygge 4, beside Oslo City Hall and Aker Brygge, is the practical departure point for the island ferries. Regular Ruter public-transport tickets are valid on these boats, as is the Oslo Pass.

The harbour is also the simplest place to appreciate the contrast that defines the inner fjord: the Opera and new waterfront districts behind you; low, wooded islands ahead. Allow time for the crossing rather than viewing it merely as transport.

Choose an island

The islands have different jobs. Pick one or two rather than racing around the whole loop.

  • Hovedøya: the strongest first stop for the medieval monastery ruins, walking paths and bathing spots.
  • Gressholmen: a quieter walk through a nature-sensitive island landscape; it is linked to Rambergøya and Heggholmen.
  • Lindøya, Bleikøya and Nakkholmen: cottage islands best explored on public paths with respect for private homes.
  • Langøyene: a longer summer outing for beach time and swimming; service is seasonal.

Ferries and timing

B1 serves Hovedøya, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, Lindøya and Nakkholmen. Summer brings extra departures, including B1X for Hovedøya and B2 for Langøyene. Routes and stopping patterns change with the season, so use the live journey planner on the day.

Buy your ticket before leaving the mainland: tickets are not sold on the islands. In summer, ferries run from early morning to late evening; winter service is much thinner. Do not miss the final scheduled departure. There is no regular water taxi from the islands back to central Oslo.

Swimming and shoreline etiquette

Summer is the natural time for bathing, picnics and island walking. Bring water, food and a layer for the boat: facilities vary by island and season. On protected ground, stay on paths, leave plants and wildlife undisturbed, and keep a clear distance from cabins and private jetties.
