Why Manabí matters

Manabí is a province rather than a single destination: 22 cantons cover a long Pacific-facing coast and a broad agricultural interior. Use it as a region for combining beaches, fishing settlements, food, craft towns and protected landscapes rather than trying to cover it in one stop.

Portoviejo is the provincial capital and a practical inland base. Manta is the principal port city and air gateway. The coast then breaks into distinct stops, from urban waterfronts to smaller beach communities and estuaries.

Coast and protected landscapes

The southern coast holds Machalilla National Park, a protected land-and-sea area spanning dry forest, beaches, islands and marine waters. Its key sites include:

• Los Frailes Beach: a protected beach with coastal trails and viewpoints; it has no hotels or restaurants directly on the sand.
• Isla de la Plata: part of the park and an important seabird-nesting site. Boat trips support walking trails, snorkelling and diving.
• Agua Blanca: an archaeological stop within the park area, useful for adding cultural context to a beach-based route.

Humpback whales migrate along this coast between June and October. Sea conditions, wildlife rules and boat operations shape access, so treat an island or whale trip as a dedicated excursion rather than a casual detour.

Towns, crafts and food

In Montecristi, look for finely woven toquilla-straw hats—the Ecuadorian craft widely sold abroad as the Panama hat. Manta supplies a more urban counterpoint: port activity, seafood and a developed seafront.

Food is a core reason to travel through Manabí. Traditional Manabí cooking is recognised as Ecuadorian intangible cultural heritage and draws on fishing, farms and home gardens. Start with viche de pescado, a substantial fish soup in which peanuts are central. Also look for corviche, bollos, tongas, ceviche and green-plantain empanadas. Rocafuerte is known for handmade sweets including rosquetes, alfajores and suspiros.

Planning a route

For a short first visit: base in Manta or Portoviejo, add Montecristi, then choose one coast section rather than racing north and south.

For nature: use Puerto López for Machalilla National Park and boat departures.

For quieter coast and wetlands: consider the San Jacinto–Crucita area, where the Portoviejo River estuary has a mangrove trail and local guided boat outings.

Manta’s Eloy Alfaro International Airport is the province’s main air arrival point. Road travel is essential beyond the cities; distances are substantial across this province.

Protected-area etiquette

On beaches, trails and islands within Machalilla, stay on designated routes and take all rubbish out. Do not approach nesting birds or feed wildlife. The point of Los Frailes and Isla de la Plata is their protected coastal habitat, not a resort-style beach day.
