Mercado Central, Quito

Mercado Central is a working food market in Quito’s historic centre, on Avenida Pichincha between Manabí and Esmeraldas. Its produce, meat and seafood stalls sit alongside three food patios serving classic Ecuadorian dishes.

Orientation

Mercado Central occupies a full block in the La Marín area of Quito’s historic centre. It is a provisioning market first: come to see fruit, vegetables, legumes, meat, seafood, herbs and household staples in active daily trade. Food is not an add-on here—prepared dishes account for much of the market’s offer.

The building dates from 1952, when vendors from the former San Blas and La Marín open-air fairs combined their operations after a fire. That origin still explains its practical, neighbourhood character.

The food patios

Three food patios are spread through the market: two upstairs and one on the ground floor. Choose a stall, order there and use the stall’s counter or simple tables. Service is direct and built for breakfast and lunch rather than a long, formal meal.

Look for:

  • Fried corvina, the market’s best-known prepared dish.
  • Locro de papa, a rich potato-and-cheese soup often finished with avocado.
  • Caldo de patas, a beef-foot soup commonly served with mote.
  • Menudo, hornado, fritada and tortillas, plus made-to-order fruit juices.
  • Colada de churos and other traditional soups for a more particular Quito market meal.

Walk one circuit before choosing. Different stalls specialise in different dishes, and the raw-food aisles make the ingredients behind the meal plainly visible.

What else to browse

Between meals, explore the produce and herb stalls rather than treating Mercado Central as a food court. Fresh fruit, greens, legumes, beef cuts, fish and shellfish give the market its pace; flowers, basic goods and medicinal-herb vendors broaden the mix.

The market is an ordinary workplace. Ask before photographing vendors or their displays, keep aisles clear, and do not block a counter while deciding what to order.

Timing and payment

Go in the morning or at lunch, when prepared-food counters have their fullest selection. The listed schedule is Monday to Saturday, 06:30–16:00, and Sundays and public holidays, 06:30–15:00; individual stalls may finish earlier when they sell out.

Entry is free. Bring small US-dollar notes and coins: many stalls operate in cash, and small purchases are easier to settle with exact change. Prices and portions vary by stall, so read the board or ask before ordering.

Getting there

The address is Avenida Pichincha between Manabí and Esmeraldas, within easy walking distance of Plaza del Teatro and La Marín. Public transport serves the historic-centre area; use the market’s Avenida Pichincha entrance as the clearest meeting point.

At the lunch rush, keep your phone and wallet secure in the crowded aisles.
