Achao
Achao is the small administrative town of Isla Quinchao in Chile’s Chiloé Archipelago. Its Plaza de Armas is anchored by Santa María de Loreto, an exceptionally old wooden parish church facing the sea.
Orientation
Achao sits on the eastern side of Isla Quinchao, across the channel from Chiloé Island, and serves as the seat of the Quinchao commune. The town is compact: the plaza, waterfront and essential services are close together. Its defining landmark is Santa María de Loreto Church, on Pedro Montt beside the Plaza de Armas and two blocks from the coast.
The church is one of the 16 Churches of Chiloé inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. It is also a Chilean Historic Monument and, crucially, remains a working parish rather than a detached museum piece.
Santa María de Loreto Church
Construction began under Jesuit missionaries in 1730; after a fire, the building was reconstructed in 1784. The result is among Chile’s oldest surviving wooden churches. Its long, low body, covered portico, pitched roof and shingled tower are the essential exterior view. The entrance deliberately faces the sea, a reminder that boats connected these island communities.
Inside, take time to read the building as carpentry as well as architecture:
- Three naves beneath a high central vault divided into five longitudinal channels.
- Solomonic columns with carved vegetal motifs.
- A polychrome wooden altarpiece behind the altar and a detailed wooden pulpit.
- Hand-hewn floorboards, with the marks of axe work still part of the room’s character.
Timber craft, not imitation stone
The church expresses the Chilote school of wooden religious architecture: Catholic planning rebuilt through local materials and boat-building knowledge. Mañío and cypress form much of the structure; alerce shingles protect the exterior. Mortise-and-tenon joints and wooden pegs hold many elements together instead of metal nails.
Do not mistake the present fabric for an untouched eighteenth-century object. The tower was completely renewed in the 1960s, when the exterior was also clad in shingles. The significance lies in a long continuity of repair, craft and parish use.
Religious calendar
The main feast of Santa María de Loreto falls on 10 December. On New Year’s Day, images from rural chapels on Quinchao are brought to Achao for Mass and a procession before returning to their communities. These are religious observances, so give services and processions room rather than treating them as performances.
Getting there and visiting
From Chiloé Island, take the ferry from Dalcahue to Isla Quinchao, then continue by road to Achao. The town itself is easily covered on foot once you arrive.
The church is on Pedro Montt at the plaza. It hosts Mass and parish activities, so interior access can depend on church use. Start with the exterior, plaza and short walk toward the shore; enter quietly when the building is open and avoid interrupting worship.
