Isla Quinchao
Isla Quinchao is a populated island east of Chiloé Island in southern Chile, reached across the Dalcahue Channel. Its working towns, coastal roads and two UNESCO-listed wooden churches make it a focused extension of a Chiloé stay.
Orientation
Isla Quinchao lies immediately east of the main island of Chiloé, across the narrow Dalcahue Channel. It is part of the Chiloé Archipelago in the Los Lagos Region and is shared by the communes of Curaco de Vélez and Quinchao.
The island is best understood as a compact road trip rather than a single town visit. Curaco de Vélez occupies the northwestern side; Achao, on the eastern shore, is the main service town and the administrative seat of the Quinchao commune. The south leads toward Villa Quinchao and smaller coastal settlements.
The essential churches
Two of Chiloé’s 16 UNESCO-listed churches stand on the island. They are active religious buildings, not museum pieces.
- Santa María de Loreto, Achao: On Achao’s Plaza de Armas, this three-naved wooden church was begun by Jesuits from 1730. Its exterior is clad in alerce shingles; inside, wooden pegs rather than nails hold the timber structure together. The entrance faces the sea, two blocks from the shore.
- Nuestra Señora de la Gracia, Villa Quinchao: At the island’s southern end, this long, horizontal church was completed in 1880. Its broad body, gabled roof and facade tower are a clear example of the Chilota mission-church form. It stands beside an open forecourt near the coast.
Both churches reward close attention to the timber joinery, porch-and-tower composition and relationship to their plazas or shoreline. Interior access can depend on parish use and services; treat the churches as places of worship.
Around the island
Achao’s plaza, waterfront and beach make the practical centre for a stop: food, supplies and the church are within a short walk of one another. The road onward links the island’s settlements, fields and bays. Curaco de Vélez is worth a slower pass for its waterfront and traditional shingled houses; Villa Quinchao is the heritage stop at the southern end.
A car gives the most useful range, particularly for reaching Villa Quinchao and rural stretches. The main cross-island route is paved, while secondary roads can be gravel. Keep time for unhurried stops rather than treating the island as a quick detour between ferries.
Getting there and timing
From Castro, travel north to Dalcahue, about 20 km away, then take the short vehicle ferry across the Dalcahue Channel to La Pasada on Isla Quinchao. The crossing takes only a few minutes. Local buses also connect the wider Chiloé network with the island.
Rain is part of the setting in every season. Bring a waterproof outer layer and shoes suited to wet pavement, gravel and wooden church floors. Summer, from December to February, offers the mildest conditions but does not remove the need for rain gear.
