Museo Marítimo Nacional
Chile’s National Maritime Museum occupies the former Naval School on Cerro Artillería in Valparaíso. Its galleries trace the country’s naval and maritime history through ship models, uniforms, weapons, navigation material and archival collections.
Orientation
The Museo Marítimo Nacional stands at Paseo 21 de Mayo 45, on Cerro Artillería in Valparaíso’s Playa Ancha district. It occupies the former Naval School, inaugurated in 1893 and now protected as a Historic Monument. The building is part of the visit: its formal institutional architecture gives the collection a strong naval setting.
The museum began in 1915 as the Chilean Navy’s first naval museum, initially aboard the monitor Huáscar. It moved through several locations before opening in this building in 1988; it adopted its present name in 2011.
What the museum covers
This is a national collection rather than a simple naval-hero gallery. Its nearly 5,000 objects cover art, history and science, supported by the Navy’s historical archive and library. Expect arms, flags, medals, coins, uniforms, navigational instruments, paintings and detailed ship models.
The permanent display is organized in 17 rooms. Core subjects include:
- Chilean independence and Lord Cochrane
- The War of the Pacific and Arturo Prat
- Cape Horn, Antarctic exploration and the Marine Infantry
- Naval modelling and the battleship Almirante Latorre
Look beyond the ceremonial objects. The models, instruments and working equipment explain how ships were navigated, supplied and crewed, while the conflict rooms place naval campaigns in their historical context.
How to visit
Enter from Paseo 21 de Mayo, directly on Cerro Artillería. The museum is a useful stop when exploring the hill and the surrounding historic waterfront district; allow about 90 minutes for the permanent galleries and the Anchor Courtyard outside.
Facilities: there is a ticket office, toilets, shop, café or restaurant service, and Wi-Fi. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions, so the exact programme can vary.
Hours and admission
The museum lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:00, with final entry 30 minutes before closing. It closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
For 2026, foreign visitors pay CLP 4,000. Chilean adult admission is CLP 2,800; reduced rates apply to children up to 14, older visitors and students with the relevant Chilean student card. Pay attention to the final-entry time: the permanent display is substantial enough that a late arrival cuts the visit short.
Building and setting
Do not treat the museum as separate from its site. The former Naval School has housed it since 1988, and the exterior and courtyard are integral to the experience. Finish in the Anchor Courtyard, then step back onto Paseo 21 de Mayo to orient yourself above Valparaíso’s port district.
