Juan Fernández Archipelago
Juan Fernández is a remote Chilean archipelago in the South Pacific, around 650 km offshore. Its volcanic islands combine steep ridges, endemic forest and a small fishing community based in San Juan Bautista on Robinson Crusoe Island.
Orientation
Juan Fernández consists of Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara, plus smaller islets. The islands’ volcanic terrain rises sharply from the Pacific into ridges, ravines and coastal cliffs. Robinson Crusoe is the practical base: San Juan Bautista, on Cumberland Bay, is the archipelago’s only inhabited settlement and the place for accommodation, food and local services.
The archipelago is also a biosphere reserve. Its isolation produced an unusually high concentration of endemic plants and animals, so the landscape is not merely scenic—it is fragile habitat.
What to see and do
Most land-based exploration is on Robinson Crusoe, much of which lies within Archipiélago Juan Fernández National Park.
- Mirador de Selkirk: a demanding 3.5 km return walk, normally taking two to three hours, with broad views over the settlement and sea.
- Plazoleta del Yunque: a 2 km, medium-difficulty route of roughly three to three-and-a-half hours through the slopes beneath El Yunque.
- Puerto Francés: a longer, demanding 12.9 km route from the settlement, usually four to five hours.
- On the water: local boat trips circle parts of Robinson Crusoe; kayaking in Cumberland Bay and diving are established ways to see the island’s volcanic coast and marine life.
Look carefully rather than chase sightings. The Juan Fernández fur seal and the Juan Fernández firecrown are endemic; the latter is endangered.
Getting there and around
There is no road link from mainland Chile. The usual route is a small-aircraft flight from Santiago to Robinson Crusoe, taking about 2.5 hours. The airfield is at the far end of the island, followed by an approximately one-hour boat transfer to Cumberland Bay and San Juan Bautista.
Sea passage is possible from central Chilean ports, but crossings take two to three days and departures are infrequent. Weather affects both aircraft and boats; leave slack at either end of an island itinerary.
San Juan Bautista is compact on foot. Reaching trailheads, remote coves and the airfield involves boats, local transfers or guided arrangements rather than casual self-driving.
Park access and trail rules
Buy national-park entry before setting out and register your departure and return times for self-guided routes. Some walks require a guide. The park’s entry ticket is valid for seven days.
Carry water, a windproof waterproof layer and proper footwear. Trails are steep and exposed in places. From June to September, rockfall and landslide risk is specifically flagged on several routes, including Mirador de Selkirk, Centinela and Plazoleta del Yunque.
Timing and local rhythm
October to March is generally the warmer, drier window and the easiest period for walking and sea-based activities. Conditions can still change quickly: cloud, wind and swell govern daily plans.
This is a working island community with lobster fishing at its core. Keep to marked routes, do not disturb seals or birds, and treat boat schedules as weather-dependent rather than fixed.
