Santiago
Santiago is Chile’s capital, set in a broad central valley beneath the Andes. It combines a walkable historic core, major museums, hillside parks and distinct neighbourhoods linked by Metro and bus.
Start with the historic centre
Santiago’s civic core is compact enough to cover on foot. Begin at Plaza de Armas, the city’s kilometre zero, where the Metropolitan Cathedral, former post office and other landmark buildings frame the square. Walk south to Palacio de La Moneda, Chile’s presidential palace, and allow time for the cultural centre beneath it.
For a museum stop, the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is close to Plaza de Armas. Cerro Santa Lucía, the hill associated with the city’s 1541 foundation, is an effective short climb for central-city views. Continue east to Lastarria and Bellas Artes for the Fine Arts Museum, Forestal Park and cafés.
Take in the city from Cerro San Cristóbal
The large Metropolitan Park rises north of the Mapocho River. Cerro San Cristóbal is its defining hill: its summit holds the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception and broad views across the city toward the Andes.
- Funicular: board near Pío Nono after walking from Baquedano Metro.
- Cable car: use it from the summit or from the Pedro de Valdivia side of the park.
- On foot: the main ascent takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes; use proper footwear, carry water and expect exposed sun.
The Japanese Garden and Bellavista lie on or beside the park circuit. Bellavista also contains La Chascona, Pablo Neruda’s former home, and a dense concentration of restaurants and bars.
Choose neighbourhoods by interest
Lastarria and Bellas Artes suit a museum-and-walk day. Barrio Italia is a district of design shops, small businesses and restaurants. Yungay retains a residential historic character, with murals and cultural spaces. For seafood and market atmosphere, head to Mercado Central near the Mapocho River.
Do not try to treat the city as one continuous walking route. Santiago is extensive; pair one central area with one outer neighbourhood or hill each day.
Arrivals and getting around
Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) is about 17 km from central Santiago. Airport buses connect with Pajaritos and Los Héroes Metro stations; taxis, transfers and ride services are alternatives.
Within the city, use the Metro for the fastest cross-town moves and Red buses for gaps between stations. Plaza de Armas is served by Lines 3 and 5; Baquedano by Lines 1 and 5. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded stations, markets and tourist areas.
Weather and timing
Santiago has a Mediterranean climate. Summer brings strong sun and heat; carry water, sunscreen and a layer for cooler evenings. Winter can be cool and hazy, while a clear day after rain gives the best chance of seeing the Andes. Museums and indoor cultural venues commonly set their own weekly closing days, so put the historic centre, parks and viewpoints first if your schedule is tight.
