Paseo Dimalow

Paseo Dimalow is a short, car-free passage on Cerro Alegre, above central Valparaíso. Its key feature is its relationship with Ascensor Reina Victoria: the funicular’s upper station opens beside a small square, and an access footbridge carries pedestrians onto the paseo.

This is not a self-contained attraction at the end of a ride. Treat it as a useful walking link through the hill. From here, pedestrian routes connect with Calle Capilla and Almirante Montt, placing you within the compact street network of Cerro Alegre.

The bridge and the view

Cross the footbridge slowly. The funicular track drops away below, while the hillside opens towards Valparaíso’s lower city, bay and surrounding cerros. The bridge, handrails and narrow edge of the paseo make the change in level immediately legible.

The passage is part of the historic fabric of Cerro Alegre. Development here dates to the late 19th century, and the buildings reflect the European, particularly English-influenced, character that shaped these hills. Look at the ordinary urban details rather than expecting a formal monument: closely set façades, hillside foundations, stair structures and the way homes sit beside cafés, restaurants and small shops.

How to arrive and continue

The most direct approach is Ascensor Reina Victoria from Calle Elías, near Plaza Aníbal Pinto. At the top, cross the bridge and continue on foot into Cerro Alegre. If the funicular is unavailable, reach the paseo via the hill’s street network, using Calle Capilla or Almirante Montt.

• On foot: Best for linking the paseo with Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción.
• By funicular: A practical uphill shortcut when operating.
• By car: Do not plan to drive onto the paseo; it is for pedestrians.

Access and current conditions

The access bridge, lookout, railings, stairs and structural elements have been subject to conservation work designed to retain their original material character. Works have been phased to keep pedestrian circulation possible, but a narrow hillside route has little spare space.

Take care at the edge. Use the handrails, especially on stairs and around the bridge, and expect occasional restrictions or altered circulation during maintenance. The passage is most useful in daylight, when its layout, connections and views are easiest to read.
