Castro, Chiloé
Castro is Chiloé’s provincial capital on the east coast of Isla Grande, Chile. Its compact centre, waterfront stilt houses and landmark San Francisco church make it the archipelago’s most practical urban base.
Start at Plaza de Armas
Castro is a working island city built around a sheltered fjord on central-east Chiloé. Start at Plaza de Armas, the old civic core, where Iglesia San Francisco occupies the square’s edge. From here, central streets run downhill towards the bay and the waterfront.
The city was founded in 1567 as Santiago de Castro. Its present-day character is less colonial than maritime: steep streets, timber construction, fishing activity and a waterfront shaped by the tides.
Iglesia San Francisco
The huge yellow-and-purple church is Castro’s defining building and one of the 16 Churches of Chiloé inscribed as World Heritage in 2000. Its scale is deliberate: twin towers rise 42 metres, while an octagonal dome crowns the presbytery.
Completed in 1912, it combines a neo-Gothic and classical design with Chilote building knowledge. Local carpenters made its structure from native woods including alerce, cypress and coigüe; galvanised metal clads the façade, roof and exterior walls. Inside, look for the timber nave, ribbed vaults, round arches and stained glass.
This is an active parish, not a museum. There are no fixed public visiting hours listed; access to the interior can depend on parish use. Keep quiet during worship and follow any photography restrictions. The patron feast of Saint Francis of Assisi falls on 4 October.
Waterfront and palafitos
Walk from the centre to Bahía de Castro via Blanco Encalada for the pier and views across the fjord. Boats here connect the waterfront visually with the smaller islands offshore.
For Castro’s best-known domestic architecture, continue to Palafitos de Gamboa. These are wooden houses raised on piles along the shore; several now contain accommodation and restaurants. They remain part of the city’s lived waterfront, so view them from public streets and waterside areas rather than treating private buildings as open attractions.
A useful walk through town
The heritage foundation maps short self-guided routes beginning at San Francisco:
- Church and surroundings: 1.2 km; allow about an hour around the original town plateau.
- Heritage and spirituality: 2.9 km; allow about two hours.
- History and architecture: 4.3 km; allow about three hours, linking Gamboa’s palafitos, boatbuilding and coastal city life.
For a wider perspective, the Millantuy viewpoint near the municipal stadium looks over the town, bay and Gamboa palafitos.
Using Castro as a base
Castro is well placed for central Chiloé church routes. Dalcahue is about 20 km north by road; its waterfront church and ferry terminal are the logical next stop for Isla Quinchao and Achao. Within Castro, the plaza, bay and Gamboa are walkable, but expect slopes and wet surfaces in rainy weather.
Carry rain protection and shoes with grip. The waterfront and heritage streets are most rewarding on foot, while a car or local transport is more useful for Nercón, Rilán, Dalcahue and other settlements beyond the centre.
