Museo del Violino

Cremona’s violin museum occupies the Palazzo dell’Arte on Piazza Marconi, a few minutes from Piazza del Comune. It traces five centuries of local violin making through landmark instruments, Stradivari workshop material and modern prize-winning work.

What this museum does

Museo del Violino is the essential primer on Cremona’s violin-making tradition. The route moves from the origins and construction of the violin to the city’s classical makers, then on to later and contemporary lutherie. It is a museum of objects and techniques, not a working workshop.

The building is Palazzo dell’Arte, on Piazza Marconi 5, just east of the historic centre’s main square. Allow enough time to move slowly through the instrument displays and the Stradivari material rather than treating it as a quick stop between landmarks.

The collection

The Treasure Chest brings major Cremonese instruments together in one focused gallery. Look for Andrea Amati’s Carlo IX of 1566, Antonio Stradivari’s 1715 Il Cremonese, and instruments associated with the Guarneri family. Seeing several makers side by side makes details of outline, arching, varnish and proportions easier to read.

The museum also holds more than 700 drawings, forms and tools from Stradivari’s workshop. These are the practical record behind the finished instruments: patterns, templates and working equipment rather than portraits of a legend.

Other rooms cover the revival of Cremonese making and the International Triennial Competition collection, with gold-medal violins, violas, cellos and double basses. That sequence matters: the museum connects the old masters to a craft that remains active.

Listen as well as look

The Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium is part of the museum. Its programme includes Il suono di Stradivari auditions, in which soloists play historic instruments from the collection. These are scheduled performances rather than a permanent exhibit, so treat them as an optional separate part of the visit.
