Why Civita stands apart

Civita di Bagnoregio occupies a tuff outcrop resting on fragile clay, with the ridges and gullies of the Valle dei Calanchi dropping away around it. Erosion and landslides have progressively isolated the village; the geology is not background scenery but the reason for its striking setting and restricted access.

The settlement has Etruscan origins, while the compact fabric visible today is largely medieval and Renaissance: stone houses, narrow paved lanes, arches and small squares. It is a real, very small village, not an open-air reconstruction.

The approach: bridge and gate

Arrive via Bagnoregio and follow signs for the bridge access at Mercatello. Cars do not enter Civita. From the ticket point, the pedestrian bridge crosses the valley and rises sharply towards the village; the final climb is the demanding part.

Plan for the walk:

• Wear footwear with grip for the bridge, slopes and uneven stone paving.
• Carry water and sun protection in warm weather: the bridge has little shade.
• Allow time and energy for the uphill return as well as the crossing in.

The bridge leads directly to Porta Santa Maria, the principal historic gateway. Look at the carved lions on the gate before continuing along the main lane.

What to see inside

Civita is best explored on foot without a fixed circuit. The main route reaches Piazza San Donato, the village’s central square, with the Church of San Donato facing it. Its bell tower is a useful landmark when navigating the surrounding lanes.

At Palazzo Alemanni, the Geological and Landslides Museum explains the tuff-and-clay formation and the continuing instability that shaped Civita. It adds useful context before or after walking out to the edges of the plateau, where views open over the badlands.

Beyond the square, take the smaller lanes rather than treating the village as a single photo stop. External stone staircases, old masonry and short sightlines toward the valley are the point. Respect residential entrances and keep to public paths.

Tickets and timing

Entry across the bridge and into the village requires a ticket; the standard price is €5. Ticket offices operate at Mercatello near the bridge and, on busier days, at Piazzale Battaglini in Bagnoregio. From Battaglini, the bridge approach is about a 15-minute walk or reachable by shuttle.

Morning or later afternoon makes the ascent more manageable in summer and avoids the busiest middle hours. Seasonal ticket-office hours vary, so do not leave the return crossing until late. The bridge, steep approach and stepped lanes make Civita a limited-access visit for anyone with reduced mobility.
