Punta Carretas
Punta Carretas is Montevideo’s southern waterfront neighbourhood, between Parque Rodó and Pocitos. Come for the Rambla, the rocky point of Punta Brava and a compact mix of cultural stops, shops and cafés.
Orientation
Punta Carretas occupies Montevideo’s southern edge on the Río de la Plata. It sits between Parque Rodó to the north and west and Pocitos to the east, with the waterfront forming its southern boundary. This is a residential district as much as a sightseeing stop: use it as a walkable section of the Rambla rather than treating it as a single attraction.
The coast changes character here. The broad sandy beach scene gives way to exposed rock, fishing clubs and the headland known as Punta Brava. Inland, José Ellauri is a useful commercial spine, while the streets around it hold cafés, services and the former Punta Carretas prison site.
Walk the Rambla to Punta Brava
Rambla Mahatma Gandhi leads along the water to the neighbourhood’s defining landmark, the Faro de Punta Brava, also called the Punta Carretas Lighthouse. The 21-metre lighthouse stands at Uruguay’s and Montevideo’s southernmost point. Since 1948 its navigational signal has included a red flash every ten seconds; it remains a reference for fishing boats.
Make the lighthouse the turn-around point of a waterfront walk. The attraction is the setting: open water, low rocky shore and fishing-club activity, not a beach resort. The coastal path is public and connects naturally with the surrounding Rambla.
Take care: rocks beside the water are uneven and the headland is exposed to wind. Stay on the paved promenade rather than treating the shoreline as a swimming or scrambling area.
Culture and neighbourhood landmarks
Punta Carretas has several concise stops worth pairing with the waterfront.
- Museo Zorrilla: the former home of poet Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, with his documents and belongings and sculptures by his son, José Luis.
- Faro de Punta Brava: the neighbourhood’s maritime marker and principal coastal viewpoint.
- Former Punta Carretas Penitentiary memorial: an open-air public memorial at Ellauri 350 that addresses the site’s prison history.
- Punta Carretas Shopping: a practical indoor stop in the district’s former prison complex; useful for food, shops and shelter when the weather turns.
Do not confuse the private golf club with public parkland. Its green grounds shape the district’s streetscape, but access is on the club’s terms.
Timing and practical approach
Walk the Rambla in daylight, when the rocky coast and lighthouse are easiest to appreciate. The shore is open and has little shelter, so bring a wind layer and sun protection. Late afternoon gives the water and lighthouse strong light, but leave enough daylight for the return walk.
The lighthouse is an operational navigational structure. Exterior viewing is the reliable plan; access to its lookout can vary. Start from the inland commercial area or approach on foot along the Rambla, then continue toward Parque Rodó or Pocitos rather than doubling back.
