Escollera Sarandí

What it is

Escollera Sarandí is the long breakwater beside Montevideo’s port, continuing the line of the Sarandí pedestrian street at Ciudad Vieja’s waterfront. Built in 1899 and later refurbished, it is infrastructure first: the eastern breakwater helps shelter the port from southerly and south-easterly winds.

For visitors, its value is direct and unvarnished: water, ships, the port basin and a broad view across the bay toward the Cerro. It is one of the few central-city places where Montevideo’s commercial harbour is the main subject.

The views from the breakwater

Walk out along the stone arm for shifting angles on the port and city.

• Port side: watch vessels entering the harbour and the working quays beyond the basin.
• Bay side: look across Montevideo Bay toward the Cerro.
• Back toward land: Ciudad Vieja rises behind the waterfront; the breakwater makes a strong foreground for photographs of the old city and port.

This is not a beach promenade. The experience is exposed, industrial and maritime, with fishing lines often part of the scene.

Fishing culture

Escollera Sarandí is a recognised meeting point for amateur anglers, not a staged attraction. Give fishing setups room, avoid stepping over lines and keep clear of the edge when someone is casting or landing a fish.

The fishing role is more than visual: local monitoring has documented fish targeted by recreational fishing in the waters around the breakwater. Visitors without gear can simply use the pier as a place to watch the harbour traffic and the changing light over the bay.

Getting there and moving on

Approach on foot through Ciudad Vieja, following pedestrian Sarandí toward Rambla Francia. The breakwater begins at the water’s edge, next to the port; it is not inside the operational port precinct.

For a longer waterfront route, the Rambla cycleway starts at Escollera Sarandí and runs 4.7 km east to the fishing clubs opposite the Teatro de Verano. Walkers can use the adjoining Rambla as well, but keep out of the marked cycle lane.

Practical use

There is no museum circuit, ticket desk or programmed visit here. Come for a short stop after Ciudad Vieja, or use it as the western start of a Rambla walk or ride.

The breakwater is fully exposed to wind, spray and hard sun. Wear shoes with grip, stay on the paved route and do not climb onto harbour structures or the rocks. Conditions at the far end can feel markedly windier than the streets behind it.
