Playa Ramírez

Orientation

Playa Ramírez sits on Montevideo’s southern waterfront, opposite Parque Rodó, on Rambla Presidente Wilson between Juan D. Jackson and Avenida Julio María Sosa. It is a sandy urban bay on the Río de la Plata, rather than an ocean beach, with the park and its cultural landmarks immediately inland.

This is a straightforward place to combine sand and city: arrive along the rambla, use the beach, then cross the road into Parque Rodó. The former Casino Parque Hotel, now Mercosur’s administrative headquarters, is another prominent building facing the shore.

What the beach is for

Ramírez works best as an all-purpose municipal beach. The broad sands and shallow bay are used for swimming in season, while the rambla is the natural route for a waterfront walk or ride. Volleyball courts and toilets are available at the beach.

Fishing is also part of the scene: the nearby jetties draw anglers for species including white croaker, silverside and sardine. Keep clear of fishing lines and equipment when walking near the water’s edge.

On 2 February, Playa Ramírez is the principal setting for the Iemanjá religious celebration. Expect a very different, much busier atmosphere than on an ordinary beach day.

Access and mobility

Approach from Rambla Presidente Wilson; the beach lies directly across from Parque Rodó and is readily reached from surrounding city neighbourhoods. The shoreline is open, but use the marked access points rather than crossing protected sand.

Accessible features: Ramírez has a wooden walkway, kerb cuts at crossings and a guide rail. During the summer season, there is an accessible chemical toilet, and sports activities for people with disabilities are offered at the beach.

Swimming and seasonal rules

Lifeguards operate in spring and summer, not year-round. Read the flags and posted instructions before entering the water; skip immersion for 24 hours after heavy rain.

The coastal strip is managed as a protected beach environment. Use bins, stay on designated approaches, and do not bring vehicles onto the beach. Dogs are prohibited during the summer season, from 15 November to 31 March.

Environmental context

Ramírez is included in Montevideo’s ISO 14001-certified coastal management area, which covers the water, sand, green areas and rocky points. Sand-capture fences and planted dune vegetation are part of the shoreline’s erosion-control work. Treat these low dune areas as infrastructure: do not climb or cross them.
