The beach and its setting

Playa Sur is one of Cabo Polonio’s two main beaches. It lies south of the rocky point crowned by the Cabo Polonio Lighthouse; La Calavera is on the other side. This is not a separate resort strip: the beach is part of the village’s working geography, with the 4x4 passenger trucks arriving and departing on its sand.

The shore is broad, open and exposed to the Atlantic. Expect wind to shape the day more than beach infrastructure. Sandy paths lead inland through the small settlement, where there is no public electricity or piped water.

Walk to the headland

Follow the beach and paths northeast towards the lighthouse on the rocky cape. The tower is a historic monument and has 132 steps; from the top, the village, dunes, beaches, Islas de Torres and the offshore sea-lion reserve come into view.

The shoreline around the headland is for observing, not approaching wildlife. Stay on established paths and give the animals and rocks proper distance.

For a longer, unstructured coastal walk, head southwest from Playa Sur in the direction of Oceanía del Polonio. There is little shade and no urban promenade, so carry water and use sun and wind protection.

Swimming, surf and summer services

Surfing is the beach’s main water activity when wind conditions produce usable waves. Playa Sur is an open-ocean beach rather than a sheltered swimming cove; judge the sea on the day.

Summer only: a lifeguard service, a parador and sports activities operate in the beach season. Outside summer, do not assume supervision or food service.

Getting in and getting around

Private cars do not enter the national park. Reach Puerta del Polonio on Ruta 10 at km 264.5, leave vehicles there, then take an authorised all-terrain truck across the dunes; the crossing takes about 20 minutes. Walking in is also possible.

Once at Playa Sur, move on foot. Sand is the surface everywhere, so pack light and use footwear that handles loose sand.

Park rule: tents and pets are not permitted in Cabo Polonio National Park. Bring essentials for the day and a torch if staying after dark; the village has no public street lighting.
