Orientation

Carrasco occupies Montevideo’s far southeastern edge. Punta Gorda lies to the west, Carrasco Norte to the north, and Carrasco Creek marks the boundary with Canelones Department to the east. The coastline is the district’s natural reference point: Rambla Tomás Berreta follows the water, with Playa Carrasco on its seaward side.

This is a low-rise residential neighbourhood built around gardens, mature trees and broad plots. It rewards a walk more than a checklist of attractions. Use the Rambla, Avenida Arocena and the streets around the old centre as your bearings.

A planned coastal district

Carrasco began as a purpose-built seaside resort. The Balneario Carrasco company was formed in 1911, and landscape architect Carlos Thays’ urban plan was approved the following year. Its garden-city logic still reads clearly in the mixture of curving or diagonal streets, large blocks and planted avenues.

The resort became a permanent residential district from the mid-20th century. That history explains its detached houses, generous setbacks and the strong presence of private gardens. The neighbourhood’s historic core and several surrounding areas are subject to heritage protection, so the character is more controlled than in much of the city.

The essential walk

Start at Hotel Carrasco, the monumental early-20th-century hotel on Rambla República de México. Opened in 1921 after construction was interrupted by the First World War, it remains the district’s defining building. Its eclectic façade, mansard roofs and formal waterfront setting make it the best single introduction to Carrasco.

From here:

• Walk the Rambla east or west for open views across the Río de la Plata and access to the beach.
• Follow Avenida Arocena inland. Its angled course is a quirk of the original land purchases and it became Carrasco’s commercial spine rather than the planned central street.
• Detour through the older residential streets between the Rambla and Avenida Rivera for the intended garden-suburb layout.
• Look for Stella Maris Church, another focal point in the original urban composition.

Keep the route on public streets and the waterfront; the appeal is the streetscape, not entry to private residences.

Getting around

Carrasco is best covered on foot in sections: combine the Rambla with Avenida Arocena, then use the quieter side streets to return. Distances expand quickly beyond the historic coastal core, so use local buses or a taxi for connections across the district. Bus routes 105, 142, D1 and D11 serve the wider Carrasco area.

Avenida Italia forms a major east-west corridor north of the older coastal district. Crossing it changes the feel of the neighbourhood and is useful only if you are continuing toward Carrasco Norte or other inland destinations.

Timing and practical notes

Choose daytime for the most legible architecture and the clearest waterfront views. The Rambla is exposed, while the residential streets offer more shelter and shade. Carrasco Creek is part of a managed metropolitan watershed; treat its mouth as a landscape boundary rather than a swimming or recreation stop.

The Hotel Carrasco is an operating hotel and casino complex, not a standalone historic-house museum. Appreciate the exterior and its place in the urban plan even if you are not staying there.
