Stara Varoš, Podgorica

Stara Varoš is Podgorica’s surviving Ottoman-era quarter, on the Ribnica side of the city centre. Its irregular lanes, mosques, Clock Tower and river crossing show the older city at a small, walkable scale.

Why it matters

Stara Varoš was the core of Podgorica during Ottoman rule, from 1474 to 1879. It is not a fully preserved walled old town: wartime destruction and later rebuilding removed much of its historic fabric. What remains is a compact neighbourhood of low buildings, narrow lanes, religious landmarks and river-edge monuments that reads very differently from the regular streets of Nova Varoš.

Allow about an hour for the main walk, or longer if stopping for coffee or a meal.

Start at Sahat Kula

Begin at Trg Bećir-bega Osmanagića, where the stone Sahat Kula is the district’s clearest landmark. The Clock Tower stands at the centre of the quarter and is the easiest point from which to orient yourself before taking the smaller streets around it.

The tower is best treated as an exterior monument; the real value of the stop is seeing it in its original neighbourhood rather than as an isolated city sight. Look for the contrast between its vertical stone form and the low, irregular urban fabric around it.

Lanes, mosques and the old river crossing

Walk slowly through the lanes rather than following a rigid route. Stara Varoš contains the Osmanagića Mosque and Starodoganjska Mosque, enduring parts of Podgorica’s Muslim heritage. These are active places of worship: enter only when access is appropriate, dress modestly and keep photography discreet.

Continue towards the Ribnica for the Old Bridge, also known as Adži-paša’s Bridge. The nearby remains of Ribnica Fortress (Depedogen) sit by the meeting of the Ribnica and Morača rivers. This is the most useful place to understand why the settlement developed here: the river crossing and fortified site preceded the later city grid.

Getting there and timing

Stara Varoš lies just south of the central streets of Podgorica and is easy to reach on foot. From the centre, use the Clock Tower as your navigation target; cars are less useful once inside the narrow streets.

Go in the morning or later afternoon in warm weather. Podgorica’s summer heat is severe, and the quarter has limited shade. Wear shoes with grip for uneven paving and take care around the riverbank and fortress remains, especially after rain.
