Jezerski vrh
Jezerski vrh is Lovćen’s 1,657-metre summit in southwestern Montenegro, crowned by the Njegoš Mausoleum. It combines a short, steep stair climb with Montenegro’s defining memorial monument and wide mountain views.
The summit
Jezerski vrh is the lower of Lovćen’s two principal summits; nearby Štirovnik is higher at 1,749 metres. Its importance comes from what stands on its exposed limestone crest: the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, Montenegro’s 19th-century prince-bishop, ruler and poet.
The summit lies within Lovćen National Park, between the Bay of Kotor and Montenegro’s interior. On a clear day, the view reaches across the Bay of Kotor and Lake Skadar towards Durmitor and the inland ranges. Cloud can erase that panorama quickly, so treat clear visibility as a bonus rather than a certainty.
The mausoleum
Njegoš was first buried at Cetinje Monastery after his death in 1851, then moved to a chapel on Jezerski vrh in 1855. The chapel was damaged during the First World War and later rebuilt. The present mausoleum, designed by sculptor Ivan Meštrović, opened in 1974.
The building is deliberately monumental: dark granite figures guard its entrance, and the burial chamber holds a seated sculpture of Njegoš below a gilded mosaic ceiling. It is a memorial, not a museum circuit; allow time to look closely, then continue beyond it.
The final approach
From the upper parking area, the route climbs 461 steps through a tunnel cut into the mountain. This is the essential access route rather than a long summit hike, but it is sustained and steep enough to merit sturdy shoes and water.
After the mausoleum, follow the stone path to the circular guvno, a traditional threshing floor adapted as a viewpoint. The limestone ridges and deep folds below make the setting as important as the monument.
Getting there
A car or arranged transfer is the straightforward way to reach the upper parking area from Cetinje. The mountain roads are paved but winding; the older approach from Kotor via Njeguši includes tight hairpins and is best avoided in poor visibility or by drivers uncomfortable with narrow mountain roads.
Ivanova Korita, lower in the park, is the practical stop for trail information, cycling routes and picnic facilities. It also makes sense as a base for a longer Lovćen walk before driving on to Jezerski vrh.
Access and conditions
A Lovćen National Park day ticket is required; the standard adult entry listed by the park is €3. The mausoleum has separate admission. Parking and opening arrangements can change seasonally.
The 461-step route is not step-free and is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. At this altitude, conditions are markedly cooler and windier than on the coast; use the Cetinje-side road if fog, ice or snow makes the Kotor approach unsuitable.
