New Podgorica

New Podgorica is the post-war urban expansion on the west side of the Morača River in Podgorica, Montenegro. Broad boulevards, apartment districts and major public buildings give this side of the capital its modern, open-grained character.

Read the city plan

New Podgorica is best understood as an urban landscape rather than a single old-town-style quarter. After the Second World War, Podgorica expanded west across the Morača with wide traffic corridors, freestanding civic buildings and larger residential districts. The result is a sharp contrast with the close lanes of Stara Varoš and the regular 19th-century grid east of the river.

Use the broad streets and open spaces to read the post-war city: long sightlines, blocks set back from the road, and substantial distances between buildings. This is a working residential and administrative part of the capital, not a compact monument zone.

Start at Millennium Bridge

Millennium Bridge is the clearest orientation point. Opened in 2005, this cable-stayed road bridge crosses the Morača on a single, inclined 57-metre pylon. Its white cables and slim deck make a deliberate visual break from the heavier post-war fabric around it.

Walk across it for the river view and use it as the link between the central streets and the western districts. The bridge carries traffic, but pedestrian routes run alongside it. From the west bank, look back toward the older city and down into the broad, rocky Morača channel.

Follow the river edge

The Morača is Podgorica’s major river and the edge that gives New Podgorica its shape. Its banks are lower than the surrounding streets, so the river often reads as a steep, open cut through the city rather than a formal waterfront boulevard.

The riverside promenade is used for walking and recreation. It is a useful cooler route in warm weather, but treat it as a river landscape, not a continuous retail strip. Stay on established paths and keep clear of the water in poor conditions.

Buildings and parks

Two stops show the range of the western side:

  • Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection: a vast modern Orthodox church with an iconostasis modelled on the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, an underground church and gold-ground frescoes.
  • Kruševac Park: a green break around the pink Petrović Palace, home to the Centre of Contemporary Art and its permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Together they place religious architecture, a former royal residence and contemporary art within the same modern city extension.

Getting around

New Podgorica is straightforward on foot where destinations are close, but its scale is larger than the historic core. Plan walks around a bridge crossing and one or two fixed stops rather than trying to cover every residential block. Cycling is practical on the flatter streets; a cultural cycling route in Podgorica includes both the Cathedral and Millennium Bridge.

Summer heat is a serious factor in this exposed urban fabric. Walk early or late, carry water, and use the river edge or park shade for breaks.
