Orlov krš
Orlov krš is the low karst mountain above southwest Cetinje, beside Cetinje Monastery. Its plateau holds the mausoleum of Metropolitan Danilo Petrović and looks across the old royal capital towards Lovćen.
Orientation
Orlov krš—literally “Eagle’s Rock”—rises directly above the southwestern edge of Cetinje, close to Cetinje Monastery. It is a compact mountain landmark rather than a remote hike: the town’s historic core sits below, while the pale limestone and the memorial plateau define the summit area.
The point of coming is twofold: a clear read of Cetinje’s layout from above and a close look at a monument tied to the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty.
The Danilo Mausoleum
At the top stands the mausoleum of Metropolitan Danilo Petrović, founder of the Petrović dynasty. The monument was erected in 1896 for the dynasty’s bicentenary, following a concept by Princess Jelena, daughter of King Nikola.
Look closely at the stone sarcophagus:
- A high cross rises from its inscribed front slab.
- Reliefs refer to Danilo’s spiritual and secular authority.
- Cross, circle and flower motifs appear in the decoration.
- A round medallion carries his profile.
Four slender columns support the canopy over the tomb. Its blue ceiling, dotted with gilded stars, is an unexpectedly detailed contrast to the bare karst around it.
The viewpoint
The plateau is a practical place to orient yourself before exploring Cetinje on foot. Below are the monastery complex, streets and roofs of the historic centre; beyond them, the rocky Lovćen landscape closes the basin.
The mausoleum and the view belong together. Walk around the monument rather than treating it as a single photo stop: the strongest town views open from the plateau’s edge, while the canopy is best appreciated against the rock behind it.
Getting there
Start from the Cetinje Monastery area at the foot of the hill. An asphalt approach follows the southwestern side of Orlov krš to the memorial plateau. The ascent is short but uphill, so walking shoes are more useful than city footwear.
Cetinje’s centre is compact enough to combine Orlov krš with the monastery, Biljarda and the Court Church on Ćipur in one walking circuit. The hill is immediately behind the historic sights, not outside town.
Access and visit notes
Entry to Orlov krš is free. Visit in daylight to see both the stonework and the city clearly; the plateau is an open, exposed place rather than a landscaped park.
Treat the mausoleum as a memorial, not a climbing structure. Stay on the established approach and keep clear of the sarcophagus and canopy while taking photographs.
