What this place is

Largo do Chafariz de Dentro is not a grand square; it is a useful pause at the foot of Alfama’s steep lanes, close to the Tagus-side streets. Its defining feature is the Chafariz de Dentro, also known historically as the Chafariz dos Cavalos. A textual reference to the water source dates to 1285.

The name “de Dentro” means “inside”: after the Fernandine Wall was built in 1373–75, the fountain lay within the new defences. A gate and two towers once stood here. The wall itself was largely dismantled in the 18th century, but archaeology has traced this fortified edge and the water infrastructure beneath the square.

Read the fountain

Find the long, restrained limestone fountain wall rather than expecting a freestanding monument. Its shallow rectangular basin, iron fittings and central inscribed panel are the details worth examining.

The spring was a working asset, not decoration. In earlier centuries its water served people, animals and vessels at the riverfront. The source’s strong flow led to improvements in the late 15th century, when water was channelled toward the shore for ships. The fountain was renovated in 1622; its later fabric preserves that history in stone.

The square today

The Museu do Fado occupies the prominent building at number 1. It is a useful companion visit if you want the cultural history of fado and Portuguese guitar; the museum includes permanent and temporary displays, a documentation centre and an auditorium.

Keep the distinction clear: the museum is an adjacent attraction, while the largo is the historic public space shaped by the spring, former wall and routes down through Alfama. Look across the square toward the fountain before heading into Rua dos Remédios or uphill through the smaller lanes.

Getting here and moving on

The square is reached on foot from central Alfama or from the riverside. Santa Apolónia, on the Blue metro line and the northern rail route, is the nearest major station. Carris buses 728, 735, 759 and 794 stop in the wider area.

From the upper part of Alfama, the approach is a descent over cobbles, steps and uneven gradients. Wear shoes with grip. The square itself is comparatively level, but the lanes immediately beyond it are not suitable for a fast or fully step-free route.

Practical timing

The largo is public space, so there is no admission charge or gate. Visit in daylight if your aim is to read the fountain details and follow the surrounding street pattern.

Museum opening hours and entry conditions are separate from the square. The area can host seasonal activity directly opposite the museum, so the open space may occasionally be configured differently.
