Castelo de São Jorge

What it is

Castelo de São Jorge occupies the highest hill in Lisbon’s historic centre, above Alfama. The site has been occupied since the Iron Age; the fortress developed under Muslim rule and was taken by Afonso Henriques in the 1147 conquest of Lisbon. It later became the royal Alcáçova, before serving military and archival roles.

The castle seen today is a large outdoor complex rather than a furnished palace. Its walls, towers, gardens, museum spaces and excavated areas explain why the hill mattered for centuries.

What to see

Start with the Castelejo, the compact inner fortification. Climb the ramparts and towers for changing angles over Alfama’s roofs, Baixa and the Tagus. Steps and uneven stone are part of the route.

Key stops include:

• Tower of Ulysses: home to the Camera Obscura, which projects a live image of Lisbon through a periscope.
• Archaeological site: traces the long occupation of the hill; access is through the included general guided visit.
• Museum and permanent displays: useful context before or after the wall walk.
• Gardens and viewpoints: a quieter counterpoint to the battlements, with broad city-and-river views.

The Camera Obscura is accessed on a guided visit included with admission and depends on weather conditions.

Getting there

The entrance is on Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo. From the Sé Cathedral or Portas do Sol, follow the steep lanes uphill through Alfama; allow for cobbles and stairs. Tram 28E reaches the Sé and Portas do Sol area, but not the gate itself. Bus 737 is the more direct public-transport approach, followed by a short walk.

Driving is a poor fit for the surrounding lanes. The castle is best combined with a walk through Alfama, beginning low down and keeping the castle for the final climb.

Tickets and timing

A standard adult ticket is €17. The monument opens daily 9:00–21:00 from March through October and 9:00–18:00 from November through February. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

It closes on 1 January, 1 May, and 24, 25 and 31 December. In summer, wall-walks and towers can close before the monument itself as daylight fades; in winter they close at 17:30. Arrive with enough time for the ramparts rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Access note

This is a hilltop fortress with steep approaches, steps and irregular historic paving. The strongest experience is outdoors and on foot; it is not a conventional interior-palace visit.
