Khambhat, Gujarat
Khambhat, historically known as Cambay, is a former Indian Ocean port city at the head of Gujarat’s Gulf of Khambhat. Its old quarters preserve Jain religious buildings, a major early mosque and the working tradition of agate cutting.
Why Khambhat matters
Khambhat sits in Anand district at the northern end of the Gulf of Khambhat, where the Mahi’s sediment-rich coastal landscape meets the Arabian Sea. Known historically as Cambay, it was a major trading city: textiles, indigo, cotton, leather and worked stones moved through its port, linking Gujarat to markets across the Indian Ocean.
The sea trade that made the city wealthy also helps explain its decline. Silt and shallow channels progressively restricted navigation, shifting large-scale maritime commerce elsewhere. Khambhat is therefore best approached as a living town with a port history, not as a preserved harbour museum.
Read the old town
The compact centre rewards an unhurried walk through lanes, markets and religious precincts. Look for the mix of Jain, Hindu and Islamic architecture that reflects a long mercantile city rather than a single monument zone.
- Jami Mosque: Built in 1325, this nationally protected monument is one of Gujarat’s earliest surviving Islamic buildings. Its open courtyard, dense stone colonnades, low domes and carved details are the essential architectural stop.
- Jain derasars: Khambhat remains an important Jain pilgrimage centre, with numerous temples dispersed through the town. Dress conservatively, remove footwear where required and keep visits quiet.
- Bhairavnath stepwell: A substantial historic stepwell near Gawara Gate, useful for understanding how water infrastructure structured the old city.
Agate, sweets and market streets
Khambhat’s signature craft is akik—agate worked into beads, jewellery and small decorative objects. The city is known for cutting and polishing the banded stone, a craft with deep regional roots. Buy for workmanship rather than exaggerated claims about a stone’s powers.
For food, seek out halvasan and sutarfeni, two sweets closely associated with Khambhat. They travel better than most hot snacks and make practical gifts.
Coast and tide
The gulf is not a beach resort. Its shoreline is shaped by mudflats, powerful tidal movement and silty water; the dramatic change between high and low tide is the point. View the coast from firm ground and ask locally about the day’s tide before heading out.
Warning: Do not walk onto tidal flats or attempt to cross muddy channels. Incoming water and soft ground can make a seemingly open shore unsafe.
Getting there and timing
Khambhat is connected by road to central Gujarat and by rail to Anand, the main regional interchange. Within town, use an autorickshaw for scattered sights; the old centre is best handled on foot in short stretches.
Visit in the cooler, drier months, roughly October to February, for easier walking. Start early for the old town, pause during the hottest part of the day, and time any waterfront stop around the tide rather than treating it as an all-day promenade.
