Ponte Giratória

What this bridge is

Ponte Giratória is one of Recife’s key crossings between São José and Bairro do Recife. Its official name is Ponte 12 de Setembro, but the older popular name has endured.

The bridge runs from the Cais de Santa Rita side towards Avenida Alfredo Lisboa and the historic port district. It is an efficient link rather than a monument to linger on, but crossing it puts Recife’s river-and-island geography into clear view.

Why it is called “Giratória”

The name refers to the bridge that stood here first. Begun in 1920 and inaugurated on 5 December 1923, that iron road-and-rail bridge had three spans. Its central span pivoted to open passages for vessels using Recife’s inner quays.

That mechanism stopped being necessary as river traffic changed. The original structure was replaced by the present fixed reinforced-concrete bridge, inaugurated in 1971 and named Ponte 12 de Setembro. It does not rotate today; the old name is the historical reminder.

On the bridge

The present bridge is 195 metres long, 22 metres wide and has five spans. It carries motor traffic and has pedestrian walkways on both sides:

• North side: a 3-metre-wide pavement.
• South side: a 2-metre-wide pavement.
• Roadway: vehicle lanes run alongside the footways.

For a quick look at the Capibaribe’s mouth and the port-side cityscape, use the footway rather than stopping in the carriageway. The bridge is a working traffic route, so expect steady vehicle movement rather than a quiet riverside promenade.

Getting across

From Cais de Santa Rita, continue across the bridge towards Avenida Alfredo Lisboa and Bairro do Recife. In the reverse direction, the crossing connects the Cais da Alfândega and Rua Madre de Deus area with Cais de Santa Rita and routes towards Recife’s south and west.

Traffic circulation around the bridge was reorganised when it reopened in December 2025 following structural rehabilitation. Drivers should follow the signed lane directions at the approaches, particularly when leaving Bairro do Recife.

Useful context

The bridge was closed for more than two years during repairs after problems were found in its structural prestressing system. It reopened on 23 December 2025 with reinforced girders and external prestressing. The restored bridge retains its dual role: a practical central-city crossing and a trace of Recife’s former port navigation.
