Encontro das Águas State Park protects 108,960 hectares of the northern Pantanal in Mato Grosso. Created in 2004, it spans the municipalities of Poconé and Barão de Melgaço and is an integral-protection state park.

This is a wetland of moving water rather than a park with a visitor centre or a network of marked walks. The Cuiabá, São Lourenço/Pingara, Piquiri and smaller waterways shape its boundaries and interior. Forest, savanna, grassland and seasonally flooded ground meet along the channels.

What to see from the water

The core experience is a slow boat search along shaded riverbanks. Jaguars use this riverine landscape, but a sighting is never assured; treat every outing as wildlife observation, not a guaranteed encounter.

Look beyond the banks for the wider Pantanal assemblage:

• capybaras and yacare caimans at the water’s edge;
• giant otters in quieter channels;
• herons, kingfishers, raptors and jabiru storks above the water;
• the changing texture of gallery forest, open grassland and flooded vegetation.

Research inside the park uses camera traps as well as direct riverbank observations. That matters: much of the park lies beyond the routes navigated by visitor boats.

Access and base

Porto Jofre is the practical launch point for river excursions into the park area. Reach it by road via Poconé and the Transpantaneira (MT-060); the final approach is a long unpaved Pantanal road. Arrange transport, lodging and a boat through an established local operator, as park infrastructure is limited and access is water-dependent.

Most worthwhile itineraries allow several boat outings rather than treating the park as a quick stop. Boats scan the Cuiabá and connected channels, where visibility is better than in the interior forest.

Timing and conditions

The lower-water period, broadly June to October, concentrates activity near remaining channels and is the usual window for jaguar-focused trips. Rain and flooding reshape routes and can complicate road access in the wetter months.

Bring sun protection, a hat, drinking water, insect repellent and binoculars. A long lens is useful; do not rely on a phone for distant animals.

Wildlife conduct

Keep voices low, remain in the boat unless your guide directs otherwise, and let the skipper maintain space around animals. Do not pursue, surround, feed or call wildlife. A boat that causes a jaguar to leave the bank has ended the observation, not improved it.

Wildfire is a recurrent pressure in this landscape. Smoke, temporary route changes and operational restrictions can affect travel during the dry season.
