Cais da Alfândega runs along the Capibaribe on the southern side of Bairro do Recife, Recife’s old harbour district. It is a short waterfront stretch rather than a self-contained museum or monument: come to read the city through its river edge, historic commercial buildings and bridge views.

The quay sits beside Paço Alfândega, the former Pernambuco Customs House. The building began as the Oratorians’ convent in 1720–32, became a customs house in 1826 and later served as a sugar warehouse before its conversion to commercial use. That sequence explains the scale and mercantile character of this part of the waterfront.

What to see

Capibaribe edge. Walk the quay for close views of the river, its working waterline and the opposite bank. The water level changes visibly with the tide against the walls, steps and mooring posts; lower edges can be exposed at low water. Stay on the paved public level rather than attempting to descend to the riverbank.

Giant Crab. The permanent metal-and-fibreglass Caranguejo Gigante is the clearest landmark on the quay. Installed in 2022 as a Manguebeat tribute, the painted sculpture is 11 metres long and six metres high. Its mangrove reference makes a useful visual link between Recife’s river landscape and the music movement born in the city in the 1990s.

Ponte Maurício de Nassau. At the northwestern end, this concrete bridge crosses to Santo Antônio. It follows the line of Recife’s historic river crossing; the present structure dates from 1917. Use it for a direct pedestrian connection across the Capibaribe and a broad look back along the quay.

How to use the quay

Cais da Alfândega works best as a connecting walk through Recife Antigo. Pair it with the streets around Rua da Moeda and Rua Madre de Deus, then continue toward the bridge and Santo Antônio. The route is level along the waterfront, but the bridge carries road traffic, so use pedestrian space carefully.

This is an open public waterfront, not an attraction with a ticket desk. It is also used as an event ground: concerts, Carnival programming and cultural festivals can bring stages, crowds and temporary access controls. On ordinary days, come in daylight to focus on the river frontage, historic fabric and the Giant Crab; during major events, expect the space to function as a venue rather than a quiet promenade.
