Ternaard

Ternaard is a Frisian village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân, set between Holwerd and Wierum just south of the Wadden Sea. It is a practical stop for village heritage, open polder walks and the sea dyke.

Orientation

Ternaard sits in the far north of Friesland, on the N358 and south of the Wadden Sea. It is a working village rather than a resort: the centre has everyday services, while farmland and ditches lead north towards the dyke. The village developed where waterways met and was already recorded in the 9th century.

Use Ternaard as a compact base for a slow walk or cycle through the Wadden coast’s level clay landscape. The former administrative role of the village is still legible in its substantial older houses and civic-scale buildings around the centre.

Grutte Tsjerke and village core

The Grutte Tsjerke is the essential stop. This late-Gothic church was built around 1540; its present spired tower, with flanking walls, dates from 1871. Look for reused tuff fragments in the north wall, evidence of an earlier church.

If the church is open, the interior repays close attention:

  • 17th-century furnishings, including the pulpit and communion table
  • The ornate Van Aylva family pews, recalling the noble estates once associated with Ternaard
  • A historic organ case on a gallery decorated with columns and family arms

A war memorial stands beside the church. Around it, take a short detour through the older streets to see the village’s more formal houses.

Towards the Wadden Sea

North of the village, It Skoar marks the transition from farmland to the Wadden coast. The route out crosses open agricultural ground; the sea dyke is about eight metres high and gives a broad view over the Wadden Sea. Fiskbuorren, near the former sea dyke, retains rows of former fishermen’s houses.

This is exposed country. Bring windproof layers and sturdy footwear, especially when paths are wet. Keep to public paths, field tracks and the dyke rather than crossing farmland.

Walking and cycling

Ternaard works well as a waypoint on coastal walks and cycle rides between Holwerd and Wierum. A signed 7.3-kilometre historical walk starts in Ternaard and heads south through the surrounding landscape towards Hiaure. The mostly flat terrain makes distances easy, but gates, cattle grids and unpaved sections can slow progress.

Mudflat walks also depart from the Ternaard area. Join an organised guided walk only: tides and channels make the Wadden mudflats unsuitable for casual independent wandering.

Useful basics

The village has a supermarket, accommodation options and a small campsite in the centre. Stock up here before heading for the dyke or a longer rural route; services become sparse beyond the village. Ternaard is reached by road via the N358, with local village streets best explored on foot or by bicycle.
