Chacraraju

Chacraraju is a 6,108-metre glaciated mountain in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca, within Huascarán National Park. Its most accessible public-facing viewpoint is from Laguna 69, high in the Quebrada Demanda.

The mountain

Chacraraju is a two-summit mountain in Áncash’s Cordillera Blanca. The western summit is the higher of the pair at 6,108 metres; the eastern summit reaches 6,001 metres. It stands within Huascarán National Park, in a landscape of glaciers, rock basins and high-elevation lakes.

The mountain is often also rendered as Chakraraju. From the visitor trail, its identity is clear in the snow and dark rock rising above Laguna 69 rather than at the summit itself.

See it from Laguna 69

Laguna 69 is the practical place to experience Chacraraju. The pale-blue to turquoise lake sits at 4,604 metres in the Quebrada Demanda, beneath the mountain’s upper slopes; meltwater from Chacraraju feeds the lake.

At the lakeshore, look up past the cold water and enclosing rock walls for the mountain’s glaciated flanks. Pisco is also part of the surrounding skyline. This is a viewing and trekking destination, not a route to Chacraraju’s summit.

The approach

The trail to Laguna 69 begins at Cebolla Pampa, a camping area in the Llanganuco sector. It climbs beside a stream toward the lake, passing waterfalls and changing views of the surrounding peaks. The stated walking distance from Cebolla Pampa is about 7 km, with roughly three hours to the lake.

  • Starting point: Cebolla Pampa.
  • Route character: a sustained high-altitude uphill walk on an unpaved mountain trail.
  • Turnaround: leave enough time and energy for the descent; loose ground is more demanding downhill.

The lake is a day-hike objective. Do not mistake its trail for an ascent route on Chacraraju: the mountain’s steep, glaciated terrain is a serious mountaineering objective.

Timing and conditions

May to October is the park’s recommended visiting season, when conditions are generally drier and cold. Clear views are never guaranteed: cloud can cover Chacraraju even in the dry season.

At Laguna 69, temperatures are low year-round and nights can reach freezing. Bring warm layers, rain protection, water and sun protection. Rain or wet snow makes earth, stones and streamside sections slick; slow down particularly on the descent.

Protected-area essentials

Chacraraju and the Laguna 69 approach lie in Huascarán National Park. Stay on the established trail, carry out all rubbish, and keep well back from the lake edge and unstable ground. Use a formal operator for any organised service within the Llanganuco circuits.
