Cañete (San Vicente de Cañete)
Cañete, formally San Vicente de Cañete, is the provincial capital in Lima Region, about 144 km south of Lima. It is a practical base for encountering the valley’s Afro-Peruvian cultural legacy.
Orientation
Cañete is the everyday name commonly used for San Vicente de Cañete, the capital of Cañete Province in Peru’s Lima Region. The town sits inland from the Pacific on the Cañete valley’s cultivated coastal plain. Its centre is administrative and commercial rather than resort-like; use it as the place to understand the valley’s history and living cultural traditions.
Start at the Plaza de Armas
The modern Plaza de Armas de San Vicente de Cañete is the town’s clearest point of orientation. It is bordered by the provincial municipality, public offices, banks and the parish church of San Vicente Mártir.
Look closely at the commemorative monuments and busts: they honour local figures including cajón player Caitro Soto de la Colina, footballer Lolo Fernández, seismologist Julio Kuroiwa and decimista Álvaro Morales Charún. Statues representing agriculture and Afro-Peruvian dance make the plaza a compact introduction to Cañete’s identity.
The municipal tourist-information office is in the Municipal Palace on Jr. Bolognesi 250, facing the square. It operates on weekday mornings and afternoons.
Afro-Peruvian culture and food
Cañete’s cultural importance is inseparable from the Afro-Peruvian communities and plantation history of the valley. The annual Festival de Arte Negro de Cañete, inaugurated in 1971, is held in San Vicente and centres Afro-Peruvian music, dance and song. August is the key period for related public activity; the programme can shift between venues and dates.
Food carries the same history. Tacu tacu—rice and pulses worked together and finished in a pan—developed from the resourceful cooking of enslaved people on the coastal haciendas of the Chincha and Cañete valleys. It later spread along Peru’s coast. Ask for it with the context in mind, rather than treating it as a generic side dish.
Castillo Unanue: view, do not enter
A few minutes from town on the Panamericana Sur stands Casa Hacienda Unanue, better known as Castillo Unanue. Built from 1843 and finished around 1900, this unusual former hacienda has a castle-like façade and is a National Historic Monument.
Important: the structure is in serious disrepair, with collapses documented in recent years. Its interior is not open to visitors. View it only from permitted areas; do not attempt to enter or approach damaged sections.
Getting there and moving around
San Vicente is reached from Lima via the Panamericana Sur; the town has a land-transport terminal. Allow roughly one and a half to two hours by road, with traffic affecting the journey. In town, begin at the Plaza de Armas and use local transport for sites beyond the centre, including Castillo Unanue.
