Mercado de Paloquemao

What it is

Mercado de Paloquemao is a working retail market rather than a curated food hall. Its stalls cover produce, flowers and handicrafts, meat, dairy and campesino products, herbs and medicinal plants, grains, processed goods, cafés and restaurants. The scale is the point: this is a place to shop, eat breakfast or lunch, and see the everyday supply chain of Bogotá at close range.

The present complex began as a 1962 project by architects Dicken Castro Duque and Jacques Mosseri on former railway land. Construction stopped in 1967 before the full plan was built; retailers moved into the vacant hall in 1972. Look up inside: the repeated folded, prefabricated concrete roof is the building’s defining feature, bringing indirect daylight into the market halls.

Find your way around

The market occupies the block around Avenida Calle 19 No. 25-04, in Los Mártires. Product categories are grouped, but it pays to make one full circuit before buying. The flower trade is especially visible outside along Calle 19, where sellers set up in the morning under broad plastic covers.

Start with:

• Flowers: arrive early; the market guarantees the flower area only until 11am, though individual florists set their own hours.
• Fruit and vegetables: use this section for Colombian produce and staples rather than a fixed tasting itinerary.
• Herbs and plants: ask what an item is used for, but treat medicinal claims with caution.
• Food counters: practical for a quick, unfussy breakfast or lunch between shopping.

Hours and access

Entry is free. Posted market hours are Monday–Saturday, 4:30am–4:30pm, and Sunday and public holidays, 5am–4:30pm. The early start is useful: deliveries and the flower area are most active in the morning.

The market has seven toilets, shopping trolleys and a free wheelchair service available from operations or security in exchange for an identity document. Parking is available around the market; motorcycle access is via Calle 22, while bicycle parking can be reached from Avenida Calle 19 and the motorcycle-parking entrance.

Important: photography, filming and similar projects require prior authorization from market management. Do not assume a camera is permitted just because the market is public-facing.

Getting there

SITP buses run along Avenida Calle 19. The TransMilenio Paloquemao station on Avenida NQS is within walking distance, north-west of the market; CAD station is another option farther north. By taxi or car, use Avenida Calle 19 No. 25-04 as the destination and allow time for freight traffic around the block.

Walk the market with bags close and leave room for workers moving loads through the aisles. This is a supply market first; its pace and narrow circulation reflect that function.
