The lay of the land

Cabo San Juan del Guía is the classic coastal stop at the end of Tayrona’s main beach trail. Two sandy coves sit on either side of a granite headland; the palm-thatched lookout on top is the landmark. Jungle reaches almost to the shore, while the campsite, basic services and restaurant sit behind the beach.

This is protected territory within the ancestral Línea Negra of the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples. Treat trails, beaches and marked restricted areas as part of a living cultural landscape, not just a beach resort.

Swim, walk and look out

Use only the areas indicated for swimming and follow flags or ranger instructions. Conditions vary, and the open Caribbean can produce strong currents even where the water looks calm.

• The headland: climb up to the lookout for the defining view across both bays and the forested coast.
• The coves: swim within the marked sections rather than around the rocky edges.
• La Piscina: this sheltered cove lies on the approach from Arrecifes and is a useful swimming stop before or after Cabo San Juan.

Do not swim at Arrecifes or Cañaveral: both are known for hazardous currents.

Getting there

The standard land approach starts at the El Zaino entrance of Tayrona, reached by bus or taxi from Santa Marta. From the gate, take the internal shuttle or walk to Cañaveral, then follow the signed coastal trail through forest, Arrecifes, Arenilla and La Piscina. Allow roughly two to three hours from the trailhead, longer with stops or wet ground.

A boat from Taganga can land at Cabo San Juan and avoids the hike. The crossing is exposed and can be rough; it is not a good choice if you are prone to seasickness. Park admission and visitor insurance are still required for marine arrivals.

Stay and eat

Cabo San Juan has a restaurant, toilets, camping and hammock accommodation, including hammocks at the lookout. It is simple coastal camping, not a hotel: bring a torch, insect repellent, sun protection and drinking water for the walk. Carry Colombian pesos; there are no ATMs in the park.

An overnight stay makes the journey less rushed and gives you the beach outside the main day-visitor hours.

Access rules and timing

Tayrona limits access and periodically closes for environmental recovery and Indigenous cultural practices. Confirm the park’s current opening status before setting out. Keep to marked paths, take all rubbish out, and avoid single-use plastic and alcohol, which are restricted in the park.
