Viaduc de Millau
The Viaduc de Millau is a cable-stayed motorway bridge on the A75, crossing the Tarn valley west of Millau in Aveyron, southern France. Its exceptionally high, spare profile makes it an essential stop for anyone interested in contemporary engineering.
The structure
Completed in 2004, the Viaduc de Millau carries the A75 across the Tarn valley between the Causse Rouge and Causse du Larzac. It was designed by French engineer Michel Virlogeux with architect Norman Foster.
The figures explain its scale without exhausting it: the bridge is 2,460 metres long, supported by seven piers, and its deck reaches 270 metres above the valley. The highest pylon rises to 343 metres. Steel, concrete and the fan of stay cables give the long crossing its precise, thin silhouette.
Where to see it
Do not judge the viaduct from the motorway alone. The useful viewing stops are around the structure rather than on it.
- Aire du Viaduc de Millau: the principal signed stop, with a broad view of the deck and pylons. It can be reached from the A75 or from local roads following signs for the site.
- Peyre and the valley floor: look up from below to read the actual height of the piers against the limestone slopes.
- Higher viewpoints around Creissels and Millau: these give the complete horizontal line of the bridge against the causses.
Allow time for at least two levels: one elevated overview and one view from the Tarn valley. They show two different structures—the light line across the plateau and the immense concrete supports below it.
Driving the A75
The bridge is a working four-lane motorway link between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers, not a promenade. Crossing it by vehicle puts you on the deck, but the road alignment and safety barriers mean the wider form is best understood from the ground.
A toll applies to the viaduct crossing and varies by vehicle and season. Pedestrians and cyclists cannot use the motorway bridge. If you are driving only to see it, use the viewing area and local roads instead of making a return motorway crossing solely for the view.
Understand the engineering
The project followed 13 years of studies and took three years to build. Its design had to contend with the valley’s geography, wind and seismic conditions; winds in the Tarn valley can approach 200 km/h.
For a closer technical reading, use the on-site Viaduc Expo and guided Sentier des Explorateurs visits when operating. The exhibition focuses on the construction and structure; guided routes bring the viaduct’s piers and former construction terrain into sharper scale.
Timing and conditions
Clear weather gives the cleanest view of the full 2.46-kilometre span. Low cloud and fog can conceal the valley while leaving the pylons visible, so they change the view rather than necessarily spoiling it. Strong wind is a normal feature of this exposed crossing: keep away from exposed edges at viewpoints and drive to the posted conditions on the A75.
