Cour des Voraces

What it is

The Cour des Voraces is a traboule: a pedestrian passage threaded through buildings to connect streets. This one runs through a working-class complex on the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse, linking Place Colbert with exits toward Montée Saint-Sébastien and Rue Imbert-Colomès.

The landmark is not a museum or a grand civic building. It is a residential courtyard whose force comes from its practical architecture: dense housing, passageways and an outsized circulation system built into a steep hillside district.

The staircase

The reason to come is the monumental stone stairway on the courtyard façade. Six levels of straight, open flights climb above the lower court, with landings and galleries serving the building. Stand back in the court to take in its full height and the diagonal rhythm of the stone structure.

Look for the contrast between the spare stair and the tall, regular windows around it. This is canut architecture, shaped by the silk economy that defined Croix-Rousse: workers lived and worked in these tall 19th-century buildings rather than in purpose-built factories.

Worker history

The complex was built around 1840, during Croix-Rousse’s expansion as Lyon’s silk-weaving quarter. A canut mutual-aid group, the Devoir mutuel, was based here; the name Voraces is commonly connected to the evolution from dévoirants, its members.

The courtyard also carries the memory of the 1848 republican upheavals associated with the Voraces, a group of silk workers and workshop masters. Its role in every episode is not equally documented, but the place remains a durable marker of Lyon’s 19th-century worker politics.

The courtyard floor and its two staircases have protected historic-monument status.

Finding the passage

Start: 9 Place Colbert, 69001 Lyon. The entrance is easy to miss among ordinary residential façades; pass through the entry corridor and the stair appears in the courtyard.

Other connections: The route continues through the complex toward 14 bis Montée Saint-Sébastien and 29 Rue Imbert-Colomès. It is a useful link when walking downhill through the Pentes toward the centre.

Nearest metro: Croix-Paquet on line C. From there, the approach is short but steep.

Visit well

This is housing, not an attraction designed for crowds. Keep voices low, do not block entrances or stair landings, and do not enter areas behind closed doors. The stairs and passages are uneven and steep; wear shoes with grip, especially after rain.

Give the site a few unhurried minutes rather than treating it as a photo stop. The staircase makes most sense when read as infrastructure for an inhabited silk-workers’ quarter: direct, hard-working and built at the scale of the hill.
