Ullapool

Ullapool is a planned harbour town on Loch Broom in the north-west Scottish Highlands. Its white waterfront, fishing heritage and ferry terminal make it a useful stop as well as the mainland link to Stornoway on Lewis.

The town and its harbour

Ullapool occupies a flat point on the east shore of Loch Broom, with its harbour facing the sea loch and mountains rising immediately behind the settlement. It is compact: start at the waterfront, then turn inland through the short, straight streets of the original plan.

The harbour remains the centre of town. Fishing vessels, leisure craft and the Stornoway ferry share the waterfront, so it is a working place rather than a decorative promenade. Walk Shore Street and Quay Street for the clearest view of the white-painted buildings, old storehouses and water.

A town built for herring

Ullapool was founded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society as a planned fishing settlement. The grid, pier and early warehouses were built to support the herring trade; that deliberate layout still distinguishes it from the more irregular Highland villages around it.

Look for the surviving harbour-side fabric rather than a single grand monument. Several former warehouses remain in use, and Ullapool Museum occupies the former Parliamentary Church on West Argyle Street. Its collections cover the founding of the town, crofting, fishing and Lochbroom’s maritime life.

What to do in town

  • Walk the harbour edge: it is the best place to understand Ullapool’s scale, maritime purpose and position on Loch Broom.
  • Visit Ullapool Museum: a focused introduction to the town’s fishing origins and the wider Lochbroom parish.
  • Use the street grid: the waterfront and the parallel streets behind it are easy to explore on foot; allow time to look at the early buildings rather than treating the town only as a ferry stop.

The town is small, but it functions as a service point for the surrounding north-west Highlands. Stocking up, eating and arranging onward travel are practical reasons to pause here.

Arriving and taking the ferry

The A835 is the main road approach from the south and east, entering Ullapool before the short A893 connection to the ferry terminal. There is no railway in the town; buses stop by the port.

CalMac runs the year-round Ullapool–Stornoway service, linking the mainland with Lewis. The crossing is about 2 hours 40 minutes. Vehicle reservations are strongly advised; vehicle check-in is at least 45 minutes before departure, while foot passengers should arrive at least 30 minutes before sailing. Ferry operations can be disrupted, so build some slack into a tight onward itinerary.

Timing and local conditions

The harbour has activity throughout the year, but ferry traffic and visitor demand make summer busier. Atlantic weather can change quickly on Loch Broom. For a waterfront walk, bring a windproof outer layer even on a clear day. Keep clear of operational quays and ferry marshalling lanes; they are transport infrastructure, not public viewing areas.
