Inverness
Inverness is a compact Highland city on the River Ness in northern Scotland. It is the practical urban gateway for routes towards Loch Ness, the west coast and the northern Highlands.
Orientation
Inverness is the Highlands’ main transport and service centre, concentrated around the River Ness shortly before it reaches the Moray Firth. The railway station, bus station, Victorian Market and Castle Hill sit within a short walk of one another, making this an efficient place to arrive, stock up and get your bearings before heading into more sparsely settled country.
The city takes its name from its position at the mouth of the River Ness. Use the river as your reference point: the central streets and shops lie mainly east of it, while Ness Walk, the cathedral and Eden Court line the west bank.
The essential city walk
Start at Castle Hill. The present red-sandstone castle buildings were constructed in the 1830s and 1840s as a courthouse and prison on the site of earlier fortifications. They now house the Inverness Castle Experience; its elevated position also makes the castle the city’s clearest visual landmark.
From here, descend to the river and follow Ness Walk south. It leads through the wooded Ness Islands, linked by Victorian suspension bridges. This is the most useful central walk: it gives a sense of the river landscape without leaving town and can be extended towards the Botanic Gardens.
Back in the centre, the Victorian Market is a covered arcade of independent businesses and food outlets. It is a practical stop for a quick meal or a browse between transport connections.
History in context
Inverness Castle’s hill has long been associated with power in the north. Earlier castles occupied the site, while the current complex reflects the city’s nineteenth-century civic role rather than a surviving medieval fortress. Its courthouse and prison origins explain the stern, castellated architecture.
For a major historical excursion outside the city, Culloden Battlefield lies east of Inverness. Treat it as a separate half-day visit rather than an add-on to a quick centre walk.
Arriving and moving around
Rail and coach: Inverness railway and bus stations are in the centre. Rail services connect with major Scottish cities, London and the Highland lines to Kyle of Lochalsh, Wick and Thurso. Coaches and local buses use the central bus station.
By road: The A9 is the principal north–south approach. The A82 heads southwest through the Great Glen and Loch Ness; the A96 runs east towards Aberdeen. Inverness is a logical start for a westbound drive via Achnasheen, Kinlochewe and Gairloch.
By air: Inverness Airport is northeast of the city, with bus, rail and taxi connections onward.
Useful practicalities
The centre is walkable; a car is unnecessary for the river, market, castle and main streets. Keep one for rural day trips or onward routes.
For campervans and motorhomes, do not assume that general outdoor-access rights permit overnight vehicle stays. Use campsites or designated overnight locations, dispose of toilet and grey water only at proper facilities, and keep urban car parks free for their intended users.
