National and University Library (NUK)
Ljubljana’s National and University Library is Jože Plečnik’s 1936–1941 landmark at Turjaška ulica 1, on the city’s Vegova Street axis. It is both Slovenia’s national library and one of the key buildings in Plečnik’s UNESCO-listed urban design.
Why it matters
NUK is the major architectural stop on the southern side of Ljubljana’s old centre. Jože Plečnik designed the building as a civic “house of knowledge”; it was built from 1936 to 1941 on the site of the Ducal Court, a 17th-century Baroque palace lost after the 1895 earthquake.
The library remains a working national and university institution, holding major manuscript, incunable and Renaissance-print collections. Its place on Vegova Street is deliberate: the building forms part of Plečnik’s Green Promenade, the land axis running between Trnovo Bridge and Congress Square.
Read the exterior
The façade is not a smooth modernist skin. Red brick alternates with irregularly finished stone blocks, a composition informed by Italian palace architecture and Rome’s Palazzo Zuccari. Walk around the building rather than treating the front as the whole story.
Look for:
- The main portal: its two handles take the form of Pegasus heads.
- The side entrance: a bronze Moses by sculptor Lojze Dolinar stands above it.
- The street edge: memorials indicate the line of Ljubljana’s former Roman and medieval walls.
Inside: the procession to the reading room
The essential interior sequence begins in the entrance hall. Beyond it, the central staircase rises through a dark, temple-like space lined with 32 black Podpeč marble pillars. It leads toward the Grand Reading Room, where Plečnik used chandeliers and glass walls to bring daylight to the wooden desks from two sides.
Visitor access normally includes the entrance hall, central staircase, Plečnik corridor and the current exhibition in the Exhibition Hall. This is an active library, so treat reading areas as study spaces and do not assume access beyond the visitor route.
Visits and access
Address: Turjaška ulica 1, in Ljubljana’s pedestrian zone. The building is a short walk from the old town and is served by buses at Križanke and Drama; Bicikelj stations include Breg, NUK Car Park and Congress Square.
Opening pattern: Monday to Friday 08:00–20:00; Saturday 09:00–14:00; closed Sundays and public holidays. Tourist groups must arrange weekday visits in advance; Saturday groups do not require registration.
Access note: the usual step-free Vegova Street entrance is temporarily closed during works. A platform lift is available inside; visitors needing assistance should contact library security on arrival. The closest parking is at Kongresni trg or the NUK car park.
